help pronto, remember?â
By the time the bell rang to end lunch, nobody had come up with a good plan. Janey felt frustrated.
âWe need to think of something,â she said. âLetâs meet after school.â
âI canât,â Adam said. âIâm going to the dentist.â
âAnd I told my mom Iâd help update the computers at the clinic right after school,â Zach said.
Janey frowned. How were they going to help Maxi if they couldnât even find a time to meet, let alone come up with a good idea for a fundraiser? âOkay, what about tomorrow after school?â she said.
âThatâs fine with me,â Lolli agreed.
Adam shrugged. âI only have a couple of clients,â he said. âI could meet you guys right after that.â
âIâm in,â Zach said. âBut waitâshouldnât we tell Matthew about all this?â
âDefinitely,â Lolli agreed as she gathered up her lunch bag. âMaybe heâll have some fundraising ideas.â
âMatthewâs supposed to stop by and pick up more medicine today, remember?â Zach said. âMaybe Iâll see him while Iâm at the clinic.â
âIf you do, tell him about our plan,â Janey said. âIn the meantime, everyone keep thinking.â
After school, Janey and Lolli walked to the animal shelter. Lolliâs father had agreed to pick them up there later.
âIs Ace still here?â Janey asked Kitty when they walked in.
Kitty nodded. âYes, heâs here,â she said. âI havenât even had time to put his picture on the website yet.â
âWe could take his picture if you want,â Lolli offered.
âThanks, that would be great.â Kitty reached under the desk for a digital camera. âYou could take him for a walk in the courtyard and try to get some pictures there.â She laughed. âGood luck getting him to stay still long enough to get a good shot!â
Janey grabbed a leash off the rack near the dog room door. Volunteers at the shelter werenât allowed to take animals off the property without a staff person along. But they could take dogs into the enclosed courtyard at the back of the building.
âHi there, Acey-Wacey!â Janey sangout as she and Lolli reached the new dogâs kennel. âReady for your close-up? Weâre going to make you look adorable!â
âIâm surprised youâre so excited about taking his picture,â Lolli said. âWhat if someone sees him on the website and adopts him before Mrs. Reed gets to meet him?â
âDonât worry, I already thought of that.â Janey opened the kennel door and smiled as Ace rushed out and leaped against her legs. âIâm going to e-mail the pictures we take to Zachâs mom and ask her to forward them to Mrs. Reed.â
âOh!â Lolliâs eyes widened. âGood idea.â
Ace pulled eagerly on the leash as they headed out of the dog room. âHang on, Ace,â Janey said with a giggle. âWait for us!â
Ace barked and spun around, getting theleash tangled around his legs. Janey untangled it, then hurried toward the door.
The courtyard was small but sunny. It was paved around the outside, but the middle part was grass. The shelter buildingâs walls surrounded it on three sides, with a high brick wall at the back.
Ace barked as he dashed onto the grass. After that, he hardly stopped moving. He leaped up to snap at a passing butterfly, dug at the ground, and sniffed at everything.
âWow,â Lolli said. âHe sure has a lot of energy.â
âHeâll need it to be a therapy dog,â Janey said. âIt sounds like Mrs. Reed goes to a lot of places. Now hand me the camera and letâs get started on our photo shoot!â
âThere, thatâs done.â Janey looked up from her tablet computer. âNow letâs brainstorm ideas for
