clothes.
They were grimly silent as they whizzed through the streets to the hospital. There they took the elevator to the third floor. It seemed forever until they reached it and the door slid open. The boys rushed to the nursesâ station.
âIs DadâFenton Hardyâs condition worse?â Frank asked the nurse in charge. âIs that why Nurse Tice called?â
âMercy, no!â she whispered. âIf anything, your father is slightly improved.â
Although vastly relieved, Joe said wryly, âWe sure had the daylights scared out of us!â
âIâm afraid weâve had the daylights scared out of us, too,â the nurse replied. âMiss Tice will explain.â
On tiptoe, Frank and Joe ran down the corridor. Nurse Tice, red-faced and distraught, met them outside Mr. Hardyâs room.
âWhy didnât you post a guard here if you expected trouble?â she asked indignantly.
Frank gulped. âTrouble? Did somebody try to hurt Dad?â
âNo, not that.â
âTell us what did happen!â Joe said impatiently.
âA man, dressed as an intern, sneaked into your fatherâs room, thatâs what!â said the nurse.
Frank drew a deep breath. âAnd then?â
âI was coming back after my coffee break,â Miss Tice continued, âand I saw this man in white removing the tape from the recorder. I was so surprised I cried out and he came rushing at me. I tried to stop him, but he got away.â The nurse looked puzzled. âWhy anybody would steal a tape with just mumbling on it is a mystery to me!â
CHAPTER III
Who Is Felix?
FRANK and Joe stared at each other in dismay. âWe should have had someone guarding Dad,â Frank said glumly.
âWell, there are two police officers here now,â Nurse Tice replied.
âPolicemen?â queried Joe. âWhere?â
âTheyâre searching the building. The night supervisor phoned headquarters as soon as I reported seeing that thief.â
The Hardy boys had hoped to handle this case mostly by themselves. Now the police already had been called in. Sensing their concern, Miss Tice became apologetic. âI donât usually flare up like that,â she said. âBut it was an unnerving experience.â
âWeâre sorry you had such a scare,â said Joe. âIâd sure like to get my hands on that phony.â
âAt least,â Miss Tice remarked, âyou still have the tape.â
âWhat?â Frank exclaimed. âI thought the thief got away with it.â
âI forgot to mention Iâd changed the tape.â The nurse opened the night-table drawer and pulled out the first tape.
âThanks a million,â Joe said. âWeâll take the recorder and play the tape when we get home.â
When the nurse had checked Mr. Hardyâs pulse and respiration, Frank asked if she could describe the thief.
âThe man was tall,â she said, âwith jet-black hair and a mustache.â The impostor, she added, had worn a mask which she had almost torn off during her tussle with him. âIf Iâd known Judo,â added Miss Tice, âI might have caught him!â
The boys exchanged glances. Except for the mustache, this description resembled that of the intruder at Radleyâs apartment!
At the sound of brisk footsteps in the corridor, the nurse and the Hardys left the room. Outside, they met Chief Ezra Collig of the Bayport Police Department, followed by a patrolman, who held a rumpled white jacket in his hands.
âHello, Frank, Joe,â the husky, keen-eyed chief said. Collig was an old friend of the Hardy detectives. âWhen I learned your father was here, I wanted to investigate this matter myself.â
Joe looked at the jacket. âIs that the one the thief wore?â
âYes,â replied the chief. âWe found it near the first-floor fire exit.â Colligâs eyes narrowed.
