the scale,â Benny interrupted. âNow I can do it myself.â
âWe can do other things for you, too,â Henry said to Mr. Taylor. âSweep out the store, and put prices on things.â
âI could make signs if you need them,â Violet said, smiling shyly at Mr. Taylor. âI like to do that.â
âAnd sheâs good at it, too,â Jessie said.
âVioletâs the best,â Benny added admiringly.
Mr. Taylor scratched his head. âItâs nice of you to offer. Iâm very grateful. But I just donât know,â he said doubtfully. He looked at Aunt Jane. âWhat do you think about this?â
Aunt Jane smiled. âI think you couldnât find four better helpers anywhere,â she said.
âWell . . . â Mr. Taylor scratched his head again. âIt sure would take a big worry off my mind,â he said. âOf course, you canât go back and forth to Elmford every day. That would take too much time.â
âWe could stay in one of your cabins, just like Nancy does,â Jessie said.
Mr. Taylor laughed. âThatâs just what I was going to suggest, Jessie. You can stay in the cabin next to mine, that way I can keep an eye on you. Your aunt can come by from time to time to make sure everythingâs all right.â
âThen youâll let us work here?â Benny asked.
Mr. Taylor laughed again. âYouâre hired, Benny,â he said. âAll four of you.â
âYou wonât regret it,â Aunt Jane said. She picked up the bag of curtain fabric and turned to the Aldens. âWeâd better drive back to Elmford now so you can pack some things.â
âAnd call Grandfather,â Violet said.
âRight,â Henry agreed. âWait until he hears weâre going to be working at a general store and living in a cabin!â
âYour grandfather wonât mind, will he?â Mr. Taylor asked anxiously.
âOh, no,â Jessie told him. âHeâs used to us doing things like this.â
âLike what?â Nancy asked.
âHaving adventures,â Benny said as they walked toward the front door. âYouâll see, Nancy. The four of us are always having great adventures!â
CHAPTER 4
The Aldens Go to Work
W hen the Aldens got back to Aunt Janeâs house, they called Grandfather and told him about working in Mr. Taylorâs store and staying in one of his cabins. Grandfather thought it was a fine idea.
âJane told me all about Mr. Taylor,â he said to Jessie on the phone. âShe says heâs a good friend.â
âIâm glad we can help him,â Jessie said.
Grandfather chuckled. âI might have known the four of you would find something special to do while youâre away.â
âIt will be fun,â Jessie said. She laughed. âBenny really likes Mr. Taylorâs store, especially the candy.â
Grandfather chuckled again. âTell him not to eat too much of it,â he said. âAnd have a wonderful time.â
When everyone had spoken to Grandfather, they quickly packed some clothes to take back with them. Mr. Taylor had told them that the cabins were stocked with bedding and towels and cooking things, so they didnât need to take any of that. But Benny made sure to pack his favorite cup, the cracked pink one that he had found when they lived in the boxcar.
âThis is going to be almost like living in the boxcar again,â Violet said as Aunt Jane drove them back to the general store.
âYes, except this time we wonât be hiding,â Jessie said. âRemember how scared we were that someone would find us and tell Grandfather about us?â
âWe thought he was so mean,â Henry laughed. âWere we ever wrong!â
When they reached the general store, Jerry Taylor came out with the key to their cabin. âIâm on one side of you, and Nancyâs cabin is on the
