Iâ¦â
âActually what?â
Emily shook her head, you couldnât use a baby to paper over the cracks in a marriage. âItâs about the basics.â
âBasics?â He regarded her with obvious impatience.
âThings like you letting me share things with you.â
âI share.â
âNo, Finn, thatâs Maeve youâre thinking of. Iâm Emily, the dumb redhead you keep at home.â
âSure, keep âem barefoot and tied to the sink, thatâs my style.â
âDonât be flippant! I want to be involved, Finn. I want to know about the things that worry you.â
â You worry me when you talk like this.â
âSometimes you treat me more like a mistress than a wife!â she accused hotly.
âIs that a bad thing?â
âThis isnât a joke!â she raged.
Finn looked into her stormy distressed face and drew a deep breath before gritting his teeth. âI know how much this baby issue matters to you. If you want, Iâll go with you for tests and things.â
Emily didnât know whether to laugh or cry. She was touched by what for him was obviously an enormous sacrifice, but also frustrated by his inability to see what she was trying to say.
âHave you listened to anything Iâve been saying, Finn?â she despaired. âAnd donât worry, there wonât be any need for tests and things, because Iâm pregnant!â
Chapter Six
There was only so long a girl could hold her breath, Emily thought. Finn hadnât leapt for joy at the news she was pregnantâin fact, he hadnât moved a muscle.
âWell I know this isnât new for you, but I was expecting a moderate display of pleasure.â Unless, of course, heâd changed his mind? He already had Adam; perhaps the boy satisfied all his paternal needs.
Finn blinked. âYouâ¦â The muscles in his throat worked convulsively. âYouâre pregnant ?â He grabbed her by the forearms. âPregnantâ¦!â
Emily watched the slow wondering smile break out across his dark face and felt a surge of relief.
âI did the test this morning. Well, actually,â she admitted, âI did threeâjust to be on the safe side. I had it all planned I was going to tell you over dinner, onlyââ
ââI didnât turn up.â He grimaced and Emily pushed aside the unwelcome thought that he looked guilty. âIâve got terrible timing. God, what a hell of a coincidence!â
âYouâre pleased then?â she asked, feeling for some reason ridiculously shy.
âIâm stunned,â Finn breathed honestly. What man wouldnât be, discovering he was about to become a father. Although he thought of Adam as his own sonâand as far as the rest of the world was concerned the boy wasâit wasnât the same as knowing youâd created a life with the woman you loved.
âStunned happy ?â
Finn swept his wife into his arms and kissed her lingeringly. âStunned, deliriously happy and of course, relieved.â
âRelieved?â
âRelieved that I wonât have to subject my person to the indignities of medical intervention.â
âWell it was never going to happen, was it?â she pointed out, amused by his squeamish shudder. âI mean, your fertility was never under questionâyouâve got Adam.â
An odd expression flickered momentarily into her husbandâs brilliant blue eyes. âGod, yes, I hadnât thought of that.â
Emily had. Sheâd only shared her thoughts on the subject once with Finn, who had said heâd strangle her if he heard the word blame in that context again. Sheâd believed him.
It was only now that Emily could finally admit that her desire for Finnâs baby had put their marriage under a lot of strain lately.
Emily linked her fingers behind Finnâs neck and twisted the dark hair that
