home!â
Project Pony
Val looked surprised. âThe what club?â she said. âOh, but never mindâI donât want to bother you kids with our problems.â
Her husband smiled at Janey and the others. âYes, weâll work it out.â
âNo, really!â Zach said. âWe have a club that helps pets find new homes and stuff.â
âThey really do,â Dr. Goldman said with a nod. âTheyâve helped several local pets already.â She told the couple about Truman and the other animals the Pet Rescue Club had helped.
Val looked impressed. âHow wonderful! What do you think, Tom? Maybe they can help us after all.â
âWe definitely can,â Janey said. âLola is so cute, Iâm sure it wonât take long at all to find her the perfect new home.â
âWhat a relief,â Val exclaimed. âSee, weâre scheduled to leave on a road trip inabout a week to visit our son. He lives out of state, so we were planning to stay for a couple of weeks.â
âThatâs right,â Tom added. âWe were worried weâd have to hurry to find something to do with Lola before we leave.â
âWell, now you donât have to worry,â Janey said. âNot with the Pet Rescue Club on the job.â She knew they would have to work fast to find Lola a new home before the Valentines left on their trip next week. But she was sure they could do it.
âTerrific,â Tom said. âCan you take her today?â
âToday?â Janey gulped and glanced at the others. âUm . . .â
âWe could call the shelter and see if they can take Lola in,â Lolli suggested.
âYeah.â Zach grinned. âSheâs not any bigger than a Great Dane or something. Sheâd totally fit in one of the large dog runs!â
âWell, Iâve never seen a horse there, but I suppose it wouldnât hurt to ask.â Dr. Goldman dug into her pocket. âHere, you can use my cell phone.â
Janey took the phone and dialed the familiar number. When Kitty answered, she explained the situation.
âWe were hoping you could keep Lola at the shelter until we find her a home,â Janey finished. âIt probably wonât take long.â
âIâm sorry, Janey,â Kitty said. âIâm afraid we donât have the facilities to take care of farm animalsânot even small ones. I could call the shelter over in Lakeville for you, though. They have a couple of goats and a potbellied pig there right now, and Iâm pretty sure theyâve taken in horses in the past.â
âLakeville?â Janey clutched the phone to her ear. âBut thatâs almost an hourâs drive away! How can we help her if sheâs not even close by?â
âWhat?â Zach whispered loudly, poking her on the arm. âWhatâs she saying? What was that about Lakeville?â
âSsh!â Janey hushed him. Kitty was talking again. âIâm sorry, could you repeat that? Zach was yapping in my ear.â
Kitty chuckled. âI said, I could ask around about finding a foster homeâmaybe one of the farms outside of town could keep her for a few days.â
âThat sounds good. Hang on, let me tell the others.â Janey lowered the phone. âKitty says maybe she can help us find a foster home for Lola. She thinks one of the farms around here might be willing to take her in until we find her a permanent home.â
âThatâs a good idea,â Dr. Goldman said, and the Valentines nodded.
But Lolli gasped. âWait,â she exclaimed. âI live on a farm!â
Janey blinked at her. âUm, yeah, weknow.â Then she gasped, too. âWait! Are you sayingââ
âWhat if Iâm the foster home?â Lolli cried before Janey could finish. âMe and my parents, I mean. We have plenty of room in our pasture. And we already have the
