you?”
Dominick shook his head. “I wasn’t really paying attention to them. Now, the woman, yeah, she is another story.”
“What’s so special about her?” Cyril asked.
A maid passed near the door and Cyril called her in. “Please bring us some drinks.”
“Yes, master,” the comely blonde said, then she left the room.
“She’s quite a beauty,” Dominick said. “Maybe you know her, Jonathan. Auburn colored hair, pale green eyes, and the vocabulary of a sailor.”
“Ooh,” Jonathan said, making a face. “I hope you don’t mean Lillian Moreno.”
“Ah, that’s her,” Dominick said. He felt his jaw. “She has a mean right.” The rest of his body felt like he’d been run over by a bulldozer and his ass hurt.
“She hit you?” Cyril asked.
“Yes,” Dominick said, not a bit embarrassed.
“And she’s still alive?” Cyril asked.
Dominick nodded. “Wait until you see her. She’s going to blow you away.”
“Literally,” Jonathan said. “Lillian Moreno is a pretty good markswoman and she’s not bad with a crossbow either.”
“She’s a slayer?” Cyril asked. He glared at Dominick.
The maid brought them their drinks and left.
“Not exactly,” Jonathan said. “She’s human as far as I know.”
“And she knows a lot about us,” Dominick said, finally sitting down. He had to ease into the chair.
Cyril eyed him curiously.
“That’s because her family has been studying us for hundreds of years. She’s a scientist at a lab not too far away from here.”
Cyril sipped his drink. “How come this is the first time I’m hearing about her?”
Jonathan shrugged. “All the preternaturals in the area know about her and they’re smart enough not to fuck with her.”
Dominick rolled his eyes at Jonathan at the slight. “I wasn’t fucking with her. I just took her out of harm’s way.”
“Then it must have been some young wolves that kidnapped her because the older ones know better.”
Cyril took another big sip of his drink. “You’re losing me here. She’s human and you guys are afraid of her.”
“I’m not afraid of her,” Jonathan said. “In fact, I find her enchanting, but I’m already in a committed relationship and Magda would pull off my head.”
Dominick tried not to laugh. He’d met the Alpha female before and Jonathan wasn’t kidding. She was one bad bitch.
“Back to this Lillian person,” Cyril said. “Is she a hunter or a scientist? I’m confused.”
It took a lot to get to Cyril, but Dominick could tell his sire was interested in the information.
“She’s a scientist who was trained by her father to be a hunter. Apparently, she’s not keen on destroying us. Instead, she has been working on a cure for lycanthropy and the vampire syndrome. I’ve also heard that she has developed a synthetic blood that tastes close enough to the real thing to keep you guys in line.”
Dominick could vouch for the stuff. It invigorated him.
Cyril frowned. “I like the real stuff.”
“Her blood is pretty sweet,” Dominick said.
“You bit her?” Jonathan asked.
Dominick nodded. “I’m a vampire. That is what I do.”
“No wonder she hit you,” Jonathan said. “I’m surprised she didn’t cut your head off. She has quite a temper on her.”
“She did threaten to stick a stake in me,” Dominick said with a smile. And she’s not bad with a whip.
Cyril glared at him again.
Oops. He’d momentarily forgotten that his sire could read his mind if he left it open to him.
“Why are you joking about such things,” Cyril said. “The woman sounds dangerous.”
“I’m not afraid of her,” Dominick said. “In fact, she has invited me to the lab so she can give me blood.”
“You better hope she doesn’t poison you,” Cyril said.
“She won’t,” Dominick said. In fact, he felt refreshed after being with her.
Cyril continued to watch him.
“Lillian was supposed to come to our meeting this week, but cancelled,” Jonathan said.
