one that lasted for ever. She wasnât actually sure she wanted to. The idea of falling victim to such a blind, relentless passion was actually rather scary.
âYou do appreciate that itâs very unlikely that the sort of man who would marry you for a one-off payment would be satisfied with that?â
âHow do you mean?â
âI mean thereâs a strong possibility that a man like that would have questionable scruples. Heâd be back for more,â Harvey explained bluntly. âAnd then thereâs the question of making yourself vulnerable to blackmail.â
âBut there wonât be any money, Iâm giving the rest away.â Katie couldnât help but think that dealing with hardened criminals had made Harvey a little overly suspicious.
âThatâs another thingâis it really wise to give up your entire inheritance too?â
âNon-negotiable,â Kate interrupted abruptly.
âIn that caseââ the lawyer sighed ââhow do you feel about raising the amount youâd pay the groom?â
âBy how much?â
Harvey told her and she gasped. âYouâve got to be kiddingâ¦?â
âIt might seem a lot, well, actually it is a lot,â he conceded. âBut in the long run I really think this is your safest bet. As it happens I know of a person who needs an injection of cash and for reasons I canât go into he prefers not to approach the usual sourcesâ¦â
âFive hundred thousand pounds is quite a big injection,â she began doubtfully.
âTrue, but the capital left over would still be more than enough to provide a very generous income for the Grahams, and there would be no question of this man ever demanding anything else of you or troubling you in any way. Iâd personally guarantee that.â
âWhy does this man need so much money?â she asked bluntly.
âIâm really not at liberty to discuss that, the choice is yours. All I can say is that I will personally guarantee this personâs integrity.â
Even if this man was shady, what were her alternatives? She could advertise in a personal column but, Harvey was right, what sort of weirdos would respond to an ad for a husband?
âAll right, then.â
âExcellent. All I have to do now is persuade Nâ¦himâ¦â
âPersuade him â¦?â
âDonât worry, dear, Iâm sure heâll come around,â Harvey soothed.
He had come around and up until now Katie had had no reason to regret her decision.
âSo this man you married, he could be anywhere, doing anythingâ¦he might even be dead. Oh, that would be convenient.â
Her friendâs joking words jolted Katie back to the present. âSadie!â
Sadie grinned sheepishly. âWell, it would. Iâm just being practical.â
âI want to divorce the man, not put out a contract on him!â
Sadie normally respected the younger girlâs reserve but at that moment her curiosity got the better of her. âSo all you know about this man is his name?â
Katie had never elaborated beyond saying that marriagehad been the only way sheâd been able to inherit the money from her Greek grandfatherâs estate. Which begged the question why was Katie flat broke these days?
Katie nodded. âNikos Lakis.â She found herself strangely reluctant to say the name.
âIs he Greek?â
âI assumed so.â
âNikos Lakisâ¦mmm. Did he look as sexy as he sounds?â Sadie giggled huskily. âOr was he short, fat and balding?â
âI canât remember,â Kate replied shortly. She wasnât quite sure why she lied. Many of her memories of that day were hazy, but not the face of the man she had stood beside and exchanged solemn vows with.
She didnât know what sheâd been expecting but it hadnât been Nikos Lakis.
Harvey, watching her face anxiously as the tall
