happened to me and my friends.
âIt all started at the Fear Street Cemetery. At the grave of a woman named Sarah Fear. Sarah died a hundred years ago. But the Evil that possessed her lived on.â
Amanda shivered. This didnât sound like a joke.
âWhen I first became a Shadyside cheerleader,â Corkyâs letter went on, âthe squad was traveling to an away game. The bus skidded and crashed into the cemetery. Jennifer, one of the cheerleaders, was thrown out the window.
âShe landed on Sarah Fearâs grave.
âWe didnât know it then, but that was the beginning.
âThe Evil was released.
âAnd it took over Jenniferâs body. Using Jennifer, it tried to kill me, to bury me in Sarah Fearâs grave.
âI fought it. I thought I killed it. But I was wrong. The Evil was too strong, and it came back. This time, it came back in my friend, Kimmy. Next, it took over my body.â
Amanda glanced up again.
Janine and Victoria sat still, serious expressions on their faces.
âThis is really spooky,â Janine murmured.
Victoria nodded wordlessly.
Amandaâs heart pounded. The letter frightened her, and she wanted to rip it to pieces. But she couldnât stop reading.
âThe Evil killed people in horrible, gruesome ways.
âIt chopped off my boyfriendâs hand and he bled to death.
âIt forced a cheerleader to keep doing back flips, over and over and over, until she went crazy.â
Victoria shuddered.
âI finally discovered a way to kill it,â Amanda read, her voice shaking. âIt had to be drowned. And I did it. I almost drowned, too. But I managed to kill the Evil.
âIs it really dead?
âI donât know.â
Amanda paused.
âIs that it?â Janine whispered.
âNo, thereâs a little more.â Amanda licked her lips. âYou may think this is a joke,â she read. âI wish it was. But it isnât. The Evil lived. It killed. If it isnât really dead, it will kill again. Destroy this box!â
Chapter 4
THE EVIL SPEAKS
A manda stopped reading.
âWhoa,â Janine murmured. âTalk about creepy!â
Amanda nodded and picked up her Coke. Her hand shook. She quickly put the glass down. âMaybe we should do what Corky saysâdestroy the box.â
âDo you believe the letter?â Janine asked.
âIâm not sure,â Amanda admitted. âWhat about you?â
âItâs almost too weird to believe,â Janine replied. âBut thereâs something about it. I donât knowâit sounds so serious. Itâs obviously not a joke.â
âYeah, Corky believes it, thatâs for sure,â Victoria declared. âMaybe she went crazy and actually thought this Evil went around possessing people.â
âMaybe.â Amanda frowned. âBut what about all those deaths?â
Victoria shrugged. âIf Corky was crazy, maybe when somebody died, she decided the Evil did it.â
âI guess you could be right,â Amanda agreed. She eyed the box. âDo you think I should get rid of it?â
âWait. At least letâs see what the other papers are.â Victoria started to reach for the box, then paused as a shadow fell across the table.
Amanda glanced up.
Dustin stood there, gazing down at her with an annoyed expression on his face.
Amanda forced a smile, even though she wasnât thrilled to see him. âHi.â
âHi.â Without waiting for an invitation, Dustin squeezed into the booth, forcing Amanda to slide over. âI searched for you after practice,â he told her. âWhy didnât you tell me where you were going?â
Amanda frowned. âI didnât think I had to.â
âYou donât.â Dustin slipped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her close. âBut I thought youâd want to,â he added, nuzzling her neck.
Amanda glanced across the table.
