for the virago to speak again. Angus needed oxygen. He needed round-the-clock nursing, and if he didnât get itâ¦
âMy sisterâs not well,â the woman snapped.
So what was new? âNo oneâs well,â he said bitterly. âAnd thereâs only me to deal with it. I need to do three more house calls before dinner. Can you move your car, please?â
âYouâre a doctor?â she asked blankly, and he sighed.
âYes. Iâm Dr Jake Cameron, Angusâs doctor.â
âYou donât look like a doctor.â
âWould you like me to wear a white coat and stethoscope? Here? An hour ago I was shifting cows blocking the track to my next patient. This is not exactly white-coat country.â
âI thought you might have been a nephew.â
âYou are indeed a close family,â he said dryly. âDoes your sister need medical attention?â
âNo, butââ
âThen, please, move your vehicle. Iâm two hours late and youâre making me later.â
She wasnât listening. âIs there anyone else we can talk to?â
âAngus is alone.â
âIn that huge house?â
âHeâs accustomed to it,â he told her. âBut if itâll make you happier, he wonât be here much longer. Heâs being transferred to the Dolphin Bay nursing home tomorrow. Itâd be much easier to call there, donât you think? But if youâre thinking of pushing him to change his will, donât bother. You bring a lawyer near him and Iâll call the police.â
She gazed straight at him, her eyes wide and assessing.
âWhy are you being horrible?â
âIâm not being any more horrible than I have to be. Angus is weary to death of family pressure and Iâm in a hurry.â
âSo be nice to me fast. Tell me why we canât see the earl.â
He sighed. Heâd had this family up to his ears. âAngus has severe breathing difficulties,â he told her. âHeâs settled for the night and if you think heâs coming downstairs to indulge a couple of money-grubbingââ
âYou see, thereâs the problem,â she said, and her own anger was palpable. âYouâre treating us as if weâre something lower than pond scum. We donât even know Angus. We never knew he was an earl or that he was living in something that looks like a cross between Disneyland and Camelot. And as for money-grubbingââ
He was hardly listening. He couldnât. He was so late! Heâd promised Mavis Hipton that heâd look in on her this afternoon, and he knew she needed more analgesic to make it though the night. Mavis suffered in stoic silence. She wouldnât complain, but he didnât want her suffering because of these two.
He glanced at his watch. Pointedly. âYou said youâre family,â he told her. âWhy do you know nothing? Youâre not making sense.â
âMy sister was married to one of Angusâs nephews,â she told him, standing square in front of him, making it quite clear he wasnât going anywhere until she had answers. âSusieâs never met her husbandâs family, and sheâd like to.â
âEspecially now heâs dying,â he snapped. It had only been this afternoon that heâd fielded yet another phone call fromKenneth, and Kenneth had been palpably pleased to hear that Angus was failing. The phone call had left Jake feeling ill. And nowâ¦was this Kennethâs wife?
He didnât have time to care.
âI need to go.â
âWe didnât know Angus was dying,â she snapped, her colour mounting. âAs far as we knew, Roryâs uncle Angus was as poor as a church mouse, but heâs all the family Rory hadâexcept a brother he didnât get on withâso weâve come all this way to see him. Of all the appalling things to say, that weâre
