âThatâs a relief. Tell me about it.â
âItâs in Sandy and has the most amazing view of the mountains. Itâs kind of like a greenhouse, so it has fountains andplants everywhere like a labyrinth, you can kind of get lost in it. I think it used to be a flower shop.â
Jimmyâs brow furrowed. âItâs not Le Jardin, is it?â
âYou know the place?â
âIt wonât work.â
Julietâs smile fell. âWhat do you mean it wonât work? Itâs perfect. And itâs available.â
âMy father owns it.â
She looked at him quizzically. âIsnât that even better?â
âNo.â
âJimmy, I donât understand.â
âTo begin with, it would mean weâd have to invite him.â
Juliet was even more confused. âYouâre not inviting your father to our wedding?â
âNo. I donât want him there. Youâll have to find someplace else.â
âJust like that?â she said.
âLe Jardin is not an option.â
âMom and I have spent weeks looking for a place. Itâs the only option.â
âNo itâs not. We can do what I originally suggested and rent the ballroom at the Grand America.â
âAnd where do we find the money for that?â
âWeâll pay for it.â
She turned away from him. âIâm not going to have this conversation again.â
âI think we should.â
âDo you have any idea how embarrassing this is for myparents? Itâs easy for you to just throw money around; my parents have saved for years for this day.â
âAll the more reason my family should pay for it.â
âYou donât understand.â
âYouâre right, I donât. Your parents are being . . .â He stopped himself.
âMy parents are being what? Stupid?â
âProud.â
âThey should be proud. Theyâve worked hard to give me everything they could. You canât just take that away from them.â
âThatâs not what I meant to do.â
âIt doesnât matter what you meant to do, itâs what youâre doing . You have no idea what itâs like to not have money.â Juliet leaned against the door, crying.
As they entered the Salt Lake airport, Jimmy exhaled. âJules, Iâm sorry.â He reached over and touched her thigh. âIâm really sorry.â Without looking she took his hand. He drove up to the first terminal and pulled up between two cars to the curb.
He leaned over. âCome on, letâs not leave each other this way.â
Juliet wiped her eyes. âOkay.â She leaned her head on his shoulder. âItâs not just the reception. I know your father wasnât there for you, but leaving him out of the wedding is wrong. Iâm afraid that someday youâll regret it.â
Jimmy held her close, but didnât answer.
âI just want you to be happy.â
âI promise Iâll think about it,â he said. They kissed. âWe could always elope.â
âI couldnât do that to my family. My sisters are so excited to be bridesmaids. And Iâm excited to be your bride. You should see my dress. Itâs gorgeous.â
âLike you.â
They kissed again. Just then an airport police officer rapped on the door. âPeople, this is an active zone,â she said.
âSorry,â Jimmy said. He popped the trunk and they both climbed out. They kissed one more time on the curb. Julietâs eyes glistened with tears. âCome home soon, I love you.â
âI love you too. More than I ever believed possible.â Jimmy grabbed his bag and walked inside. He waved one more time before entering the terminal. Juliet blew him a kiss. The police officer walked up to her.
âHusband?â
âAlmost,â she said.
âBest kind,â the woman said. âNow letâs save you a ticket
