by in about ten minutes,â Chet said. âIâll honk.â
âOkay,â Joe said and hung up the receiver.
He had just started back into the dining room, when the telephone rang again.
âWhat is it?â Joe said into the receiver. He was sure it was Chet again. âDo you want me to bring you what we didnât eat for dinner?â
But Joe heard only a crackling noise on the other end before a voice said in a low whisper, âDonât go to that séance. If you do, you wonât leave there alive.â
Then there was a click and the line went dead.
3 Attacked!
----
Just then Frank came into the kitchen, carrying some dirty plates and bowls. âWho was that on the phone?â
âThe first call was from Chet,â Joe said. âHeâll be by to pick us up in a few minutes.â
âI donât know, Joe. Do you really think this is a good idea?â Frank asked. âMaybe we should be more serious about what psychics do. Dad certainly is.â
âAsk me about the second call,â Joe said.
Frank gave him a puzzled look. âOkay,â he said. âWho was the second call from?â
Joe shrugged. âI didnât recognize the voice, but whoever it was said if we went to the séance, we wouldnât leave alive.â He grinned at Frank. âSo Iâmdefinitely going. No threat is going to scare me away from this now.â
Frank put the dishes by the sink. âGood call,â he said.
Just then, Aunt Gertrude and Mrs. Hardy came into the kitchen, so the boys cut short their conversation.
âWeâre going over to Callie Shawâs for a little while, Mom,â Frank said. âWeâll be back later.â
âOkay, boys,â Mrs. Hardy said.
Frank and Joe headed through the house.
âDo you think we should tell Dad about the séance, nothing about the practical joke, but maybe just to let him know whatâs going on?â Joe said.
âMaybe we should,â Frank agreed. âIâd like to hear what he has to say.â
But Mr. Hardy had already gone into his study, closing the door, which was a signal to the rest of the family that he was hard at work on a case and didnât want to be disturbed unless it was an emergency. Frank and Joe both agreed that this probably wasnât an emergency.
They had just stepped outside when Chet pulled into the driveway. The boys ran out to Chetâs car and got inside.
As Chet backed out of the driveway he said, âAre you guys ready for some fun? Iâve been thinking of all the things we can do over at Callieâs house. Weâre going to freak those girls out!â
When neither Frank nor Joe said anything, Chet asked, âWhatâs the matter?â
âJoe received a threatening phone call before we left,â Frank told him. âWhoever it was said weâd never leave Callieâs house alive.â
âYeah, right,â Chet said. He looked over at Joe. âWho do you think called?â
âI didnât recognize the voice,â Joe said. âThe person was whispering.â
âI wonder if it was Colin Randles,â Frank said.
âNellaâs brother?â Chet said.
âYeah. We talked today,â Frank said. âI just havenât had time to . . .â
All of a sudden, headlights from behind blinded them.
âWhatâs wrong with that stupid driver?â Chet said. âHeâs got his brights on, and heâs tailgating me.â
âSpeed up,â Frank said. âYouâre only going thirty and you can go forty-five on this street.â
Chet sped up. âIâll put an end to this,â he said.
He turned a corner rapidly, but so did the car that was following them.
Inside Chetâs car, it was almost as bright as day.
âWe can take the expressway to Callieâs house,â Joe said. âYou should be able to lose them there.â
