theyâll puke up their Turkey Twizzlers.â
âWe donât have those any more,â said Noah.
âWell, their vegetable pasta bake then.â
âBut thatâs only if Jennifer tells them,â I said.
âAnd how are we going to stop her?â Noah asked reasonably.
âYeah,â said The Moan, âsheâs already told us sheâs going to blab. And I donât blame her. Why did you have to say all that bare bum stuff?â
âI just thought sheâd say no, and that would be it. But thatâs all in the past now. I have an idea.â
âOh no,â said The Moan. âAny more of your ideas and the Gang will be finished.â
I ignored him. âI think thereâs a way we can stop her from talking.â
âHow?â asked Noah.
âWe let her into the Gang.â
âAre you mad?â said Jamie. âSheâll never join us, not now weâre the Bare Bum Gang. Who would? Only some loony who liked showing his bare bum.â
âOr
her
bare bum,â added Noah.
âDonât call us the Bare Bum Gang!â I saidsharply. I really didnât want the name to take hold, even in our heads. âI think sheâll jump at the chance. Itâs what sheâs always wanted.â
âNo way!â said Phillip, shaking his head. âIf sheâs in, Iâm out. Itâs bad enough having to see her at home. And anyway, what would she be? It was hard enough thinking up a decent job for me to do.â
âI thought, perhaps, she could become Gang Doctor,â I said quietly.
There was a stunned silence. I sneaked a quick glance at Noah. He looked like heâd been stabbed in the back, which was true, sort of. But being a Great Leader means you have to make tough decisions.
âB-b-but
Iâm
Gang Doctor,â he said, and I thought he might blub, which would have been embarrassing for all of us.
âLook,â I said, in a kind sort of way, âthere are lots of lady doctors, but there arenât any lady admirals or generals. Weâll think of a new job for you.â
âI like being Doctor,â said Noah, getting angry. No one had ever heard him shout before. âAnd you canât have a girl as Gang Doctor. Everyone knows that girls canât wee in a straight line. They wee all over the place. Jennifer would be useless at fixing grass cuts. Weâd all die of gangrene before she managed to wee on the right spot.â
âWhatâs gangrene?â asked Jamie.
âItâs when you get a grass cut, or even some other kind of cut, and first your finger turns green, and then your hand, and then your whole arm. Then, if they donât amputate your arm, which means chopping it off, the rest of you turns green and you die in terrible pain.â
There was a hushed silence as the awful reality of having a girl Gang Doctor sank in. This wasnât going well.
âBut she could carry the dock leaves OK, thatâs not so hard,â I said. I was clutching at straws, or rather dock leaves.
âThatâs only half the job,â said Noah, growing in confidence. âAnd you have to know where to find them, and even if you do find some, they quite often grow right next to nettles, so you have to be brave to pick them. If you ask me, it would make more sense to have Jennifer as Gang Leader than Gang Doctor.â
The Moan moaned, and Jamie said: âNow youâve gone too far. We donât want her in at any price and thatâs that.â
So that was the decision. Weâd just wait to see what happened on Monday. We werenât little kids any more. Weâd tough it out, weâd see it through.
Chapter Five
THE HORROR. THE HORROR
âSo, youâve got a stomach ache
and
a headache?â
I nodded.
âAnd you feel sick?â
âMmmmm.â
âAnd you think youâve got a temperature?â
This time I was too ill to do anything except
