alibi?â
âYeah, I can, and yes, I do,â Peter replied. He turned and called, âNickerson!â
Ned quickly hurried over to them. âHi, Nancy! Hi, Bess, George. What are you guys doing here?â
âWeâre on a case,â said Bess.
âAnd Iâm a suspect,â Peter said, âbut I was just explaining to Nancy that you and I have been busy all day, recruiting guys for the bowling team.â
âYou think Peter committed a crime?â Ned said. âCome on, Nancy! Get real!â
âWell, we need Peterâs alibi,â Nancy replied.
âSure thing. We started out really early this morning, looking for guys, and now we have a team thatâs going to burn the competition,â Ned said.
âGood for you, Ned,â said Nancy. She turned to Bess and George. âI guess weâd better be going.â
âGood luck with the investigation,â Peter called to them as the girls headed out the door.
âNow what?â Bess asked.
Nancy looked at her watch. âOh no! I forgot to ask Peter what time heâll be home, and I need to get home too,â she said. âItâs almost time for dinner, and I promised Hannah Iâd clean my room!â
Nancyâs father, Carson Drew, was a successful lawyer, so Nancy often discussed some of theClue Crewâs cases with him. Over dinner, she told Mr. Drew and Hannah about their investigation.
âWe thought Peter Patino was a suspect, but it turns out he has an alibi,â Nancy said. She sighed. âWeâd go back to the crime scene to look for other clues, but by now itâs probably been compromised.â
âWhat?â said Hannah.
Nancy grinned. âI heard it on television. That means people have probably walked all over the clues and destroyed them.â
âWell, youâve been in situations like this before, Nancy. You know that sooner or later evidence will turn up thatâll help you solve the crime,â Mr. Drew said. âJust keep on sleuthing!â
âThe Clue Crew never gives up, Daddy!â Nancy assured him.
The next afternoon, Saturday, Nancy and the Clue Crew met Mary White Cloud at the gymnasium. Mrs. White Cloud was going to help them with their parts in the pageant when shefinished making her Indian fry bread. While they were waiting, Nancy and the Clue Crew filled Mary in on what theyâd found out about Mr. Madisonâs pumpkin puree.
âWe didnât find any clues,â Bess said, âbutââshe pulled the feather out from behind her and showed it to MaryââI did find this. It was left by some bird in the alley outside the school kitchen.â
âThatâs wonderful! Youâre the first person to pick up a feather, Bess,â Mary said. âThatâs special in our culture.â
Bess beamed.
âIâm glad your mother wants to help us with our lines,â said Nancy.
âWell, my mom has been in a lot of Native American pageants all across the country,â Mary told them proudly.âShe knows how we should act.â
Just then, they heard a commotion coming from the kitchen.
Nancy looked at everyone. âCome on!â she shouted. âLetâs find out whatâs going on!â
When they got there, Mrs. White Cloud was talking to Mrs. Stanley, who owned a bakery in town.
âWhat happened?â asked Nancy.
âI just discovered that somebody got into the storeroom where I had put my special bags of turkey stuffing mix,â Mrs. Stanley said. âThey ruined every one of them!â
âOh no, not again!â Nancy groaned. âSomeone really is trying to destroy the River Heights Thanksgiving Celebration!â
âThis is awful,â Bess said.
âIt most certainly is,â Mrs. White Cloud agreed. âEveryone in River Heights has told me nothing tastes as good as Mrs. Stanleyâs special turkey stuffing mix, and I was really
