shivered Billy.
âMe too,â said Lee.
âAnd me,â said Bella. âSee you both at school laterââ
She suddenly hesitated.
âHang on,â she gasped. âWhereâs Boris?â
Chapter 7
After the Storm
Before lessons the next evening, Lee and Bella told everyone about their adventure in old Goreâs attic.
âWhat?â said Big Herb, between chomps of chocolate Screme Egg. âYou mean old Gore has made Miss Fitt even worse? How can she be worse than she was yesterday? It took me so long to do my math homework, I didnât get into my coffin till it was almost daylight.â
âWe donât know what happened to Boris,â said Bella. âI hope he didnât have to spend the whole day hiding in the attic from old Gore and Miss Fitt!â
STOMP! STOMP!
STOMP! STOMP!
âYikes,â said Lee. âHere she comes! Whereâs Billy?â
âHeâs late,â said Bella. âMiss Fitt will go ballistic!â
As the stomping got closer, Mr. Gore suddenly appeared with his tool bag and pretended to check the classroom door, which was still broken from the night before. But he kept glancing at the class and chuckling unpleasantly.
âLook at him,â whispered Lee. âHeâs waiting to see the results of the Monster Megacharger.â
STOMP! STOMP!
STOMP! STOMP!
A few seconds later, Miss Fitt stood in the doorway.
âGood mornink, Miss Fitt!â smarmed Gore. âAnysink you need, Your Monstrosity, just let me know!â
Miss Fitt stomped to the front of the class. And just at that moment, Billy hurtled through the door.
The whole class gasped in horror. Poor Billy! What would Miss Fitt do?
Mr. Gore smirked and rubbed his hands together in glee. Little flakes of finger snowed down onto his boots.
âI-Iâm really s-sorry Iâm late, miss!â panted Billy in terror.
Miss Fitt stared at him.
âM-my watch stopped,â said Billy. âI-it got wet in the rain.â
The other children held their breath. No one dared to move.
Miss Fitt opened her mouth.
And smiled.
âNever mind, Billy,â she chuckled. âThese things happen. Just run along and sit down. Thatâs a good boy.â
The whole class gasped againâin disbelief.
âS-sorry, miss?â said Billy, not quite daring to move.
âI do hope your watch can be mended,â Miss Fitt went on. âPerhaps Mr. Gore would be kind enough to look at it for you?â
Mr. Gore had stopped rubbing his hands together. His mouth had fallen open, and he was making a strange gurgling sound.
âDear me, are you all right, Mr. Gore?â said Miss Fitt. âYou look a little green.â
âThatâs just his normal color!â whispered Lee to Bella.
âI-Iâm ⦠fine,â croaked Mr. Gore. âBut you ⦠youâre supposed to be ⦠I thought â¦â
âOh good,â interrupted Miss Fitt firmly. âIâm delighted youâre well. Now do be a dear and fix Billyâs watch. By lunchtime?â
Billy handed over his watch. He still couldnât quite believe what was happening. Nor could anyone else.
Mr. Gore glared at Billy and stuffed the watch into his overalls.
âGood-bye, Mr. Gore!â said Miss Fitt brightly.
Old Gore shuffled out of the classroom, muttering very rude things about vampires.
Billy sat down next to Lee and Bella.
âWow! Whatâs happened to Miss Fitt?â he whispered.
âNo idea,â shrugged Lee. âPretty cool though, isnât it?â
âMmm,â said Bella. âLetâs see what sheâs like in math first.â
âNow then, class,â said Miss Fitt. âToday we shall start with ⦠But what are you doing, my dears?â
âGetting out our math books, miss,â said several glum voices at once.
âMath?â said Miss Fitt. âReally?â
She checked the
