wasnât paying any attention to me, his obsession with the game kind of pissed me off.
â Soâ¦whatâd you guys decide?â Ashley asked. âAbout Gameland.â
I looked over. Reggieâs thumb was now resting on the exposed skin of her breast. He was slowly brushing it back and forth. I felt a tingle pass through my own body, then a twinge of jealousy. Reggie was a code geek, just like the rest of us, but at least he had broader interests outside of the games.
Kelly could learn a thing or two from his example.
â Well, actually, it wouldnât technically be Gameland,â he told Ash. âWeâd just be breaking into one of the Forbidden Zones on LIâan outer zone. I think the Gameland arena is more toward the center of the islandâthatâs what Micah thinks, anywayâand itâs probably pretty heavily barricaded to keep the Players from getting out.â
He was talking about the implanted zombies that were recruited into The Game . They called them Players.
â Thereâs still the Infected Undead on the rest of the island,â I pointed out.
Reggie chuffed. âYeah, like thereâd be any IUs left after thirteen years. Theyâre all dead by now.â He waggled his fingers spookily at me and said, âNo brains to feed on.â
â You donât know that.â
He shook his head. âYouâre beginning to sound just like your boyfriend. He says itâs not doable.â
â I didnât say that.â
Reggie smiled. He was egging me on, and Iâd fallen for it. I shouldâve known. Whatever Kelly said, Reg always tried to say the opposite. And now that Kelly was saying it was impossible to break into LI, it just made Reg even more determined to say it wasnât.
Kelly paused his game so he could tick reasons off on his fingers: âFifty foot wall around the entire island, electrified razor wire, all the bridges demoed, no-fly zones, biometric mines in the East River, electromagnetic barrierââ
â EM, brah? Really? Chillax. Iâm not talking about hacking in, Iâm talking about breaking in. Remember? The EMâs nothing to worry about.â
â It could fry your implant,â I said.
â Implant, shmimplant.â
â Thereâs no way,â Kelly insisted. âIâm telling you, itâs impossible.â
â Maybe there is a way,â Micah said, still playing. He was one of those freaky types who could give a hundred percent of his attention to something like Zpocalypto or Warlock Four and yet still be fully involved in a conversation, even while being stoned off his gourd. I could never understand how he did it. The guy was more than just scary smart. It was like he could partition his brain into distinct segmentsâone for gaming, one for being wasted, one for everything elseâyet still use them all at full capacity. He was like a computer. âIâll give it some thought.â
â I know!â Ashley exclaimed. âWeâll just sprinkle a little fairy dust on our bodies and fly ourselves in.â
â Iâll sprinkle fairy dust over your body if you do mine,â Reggie said.
I snorted.
He looked over at me. âEvery time someone disses a fairy, another zombie gets its wings.â
I rolled my eyes, but I was laughing.
â Thatâs justâ¦stupid!â Kelly snapped. âBesides, you have to get through Manhattanâs restricted zones first. That can be a hassle.â
â Thatâs true,â I said. Iâd gone there on occasion with my brother; he had a special pass. I remembered all the checkpoints and the guards questioning us.
Kelly smiled and nodded at me, thinking I was actually taking his side in the argument. âItâs crazy talk.â
I went over and plopped down on his lap and planted a kiss on his lips. It wasnât one of our usual hot-n-heavy lip-bruising kissesâI
