Shawn,â his dad agreed. âThen I want you to try to enjoy your vacation.â He pointed toward his cell phone. âYou know how even though Iâm not a full-time soldier anymore, Iâm still part of the army?â
Shawn nodded, though he was starting to get a hollow feeling in his stomach. âThatâs why you train for a weekend every month. Itâs called the reserve, right?â
âRight,â Sanford declared. âWe reservists are here if the army needs us.â He hesitated. âWell, they decided they needed my unit. Weâre being deployed. To Afghanistan. Iâm sorry.â
Deployed? To Afghanistan?
âWhen do you leave?â
âFriday.â
Oh no. Shawn always knew this was possible, but it had never happened before.
âWeâll talk more later,â Carla told Shawn. âIâm sure you have a lot of questions.â
His mother was right. Shawn had plenty of questions. âWill you have to write us letters by hand?â
His dadâs laugh was genuine. âItâs not like in old movies. Iâll be able to e-mail at the base. Maybe even Skype. Youâll get so much e-mail youâll be sick of me.â
âI think thatâs unlikely, Sanford,â his mother commented dryly as tears welled in her steel-gray eyes.
I canât cry. Thatâs not what Dad needs now, he told himself.
Normally when Shawn was feeling down, he liked to play his guitar. But he didnât want to wake Peter. So he told his folks that he was walking over to Alexâs and fled.
Ten minutes later, Shawn was with Alex in the Garciasâ lovely family room. Though Alex lived close by, his house was a lot bigger than Shawnâs place. Alexâs dad ran a printing business while his momâan amazing cookâdid party catering.
The Garcias were upset to learn that Sanford was being deployed. After promising to help Shawnâs mom any way that she could, Mrs. Garcia suggested that the best thing for Shawn to do was to keep things as normal as possible for Peter.
âI can help, too!â Alex turned to his mom. âBut can we use the computer now? To find out the rules for SuperFan?â
âYou havenât looked them up?â Shawn was surprised.
âThe Internetâs been down since last night! Itâs the worst! I still canât believe you were there. It was the best Raw ever! Rey Mysterioâs gonna mess up CM Punk when he comes back. Maybe if Iâm the SuperFan, Iâll be there for it!â Alex was his usual mass of enthusiasm.
Mrs. Garcia gave Alex permission to log on, so Alex went to the computer while she sat with her laptop on the couch.
âOh yeah!â Alex exclaimed. âWeâre back online! Whoa! Check out the WWE website! Itâs all SuperFan, all the time!â
Shawn peered over Alexâs shoulder. Alex wasnât kidding. The WWE home page featured a continuous video replay of Mr. McMahonâs big announcement.
âWhat are the rules?â Shawn asked. âCan Peter enter?â
Alex clicked on a button and shook his head. âNope. Gotta be between eleven and thirteen.â
Shawn frowned. Peter would be bummed. Well, maybe next year.
âThereâs an online application a parent needs to submit. They want you to upload a video explaining why you should be chosen. Theyâre bringing four finalists to Atlanta for WrestleMania weekend in April.â Alex turned to Shawn. âItâs a total piece of cake! I should definitely win!â
âCan I see that?â Shawn asked.
âSure! You arenât thinking about entering, are you?â
Alex got up. Shawn leaned in toward the monitor to check out the rules. You needed to be strong, dedicated, and a person who cared about your community. If you were a finalist, youâd be assigned a mentor from WWE who would help you prepare for the finals.
âIâm so winning this,â Alex said
