said. âI want to be able to keep your computer going twenty-four hours a day while the meetings are taking place.â
Conrad burst into the kitchen, out of breath. âJudd, come with me.â
Judd followed Conrad around to the front and down the hill. Shelly stood holding a dirty shovel beside a deep hole. Mark pecked at a rock in the bottom. Conrad pointed. âWe were digging the grave and we hit that. Then we found another rock the same size, and another, and now thereâs a whole section of them, along with big beams of wood.â
âLooks like a tomb,â Judd said. âHave you seen whatâs inside?â
âItâs like theyâre cemented together,â Mark said.
âCover it over and weâll dig the grave farther up the hill,â Judd said.
âWhat?â Mark said. âWeâre almostââ
âMelinda is still inside,â Judd said.
âWhatâs that got to do withââ
âThis may turn out to be nothing,â Judd interrupted. âThen again, it might be something we donât want her to see. Weâll dig again after the funeral.â
Vicki was glad when Melinda joined them at the kitchen table later that morning. Melinda eyed Mr. Stein and pushed back a plate of food. âIf you guys hadnât gotten away, the commander would still be alive. Felicia too.â
âThey were going to execute me,â Mr. Stein said. âWe had to do something.â
Lionel made a wooden stretcher and placed Feliciaâs body on it. Melinda walked beside Vicki as they followed the procession up the hill to the burial site.
Conrad and Judd gently placed the wrapped body in the hole. Vicki put a hand on Melindaâs shoulder as the group awkwardly looked at one another.
Finally, Lionel spoke. âI didnât know Felicia well, but I do know how dedicated she was as a Morale Monitor. She would have made a great member of the Young Trib Force.â
Mr. Stein shifted from one foot to another. âI lost my only daughter in the earthquake.â He turned to Melinda. âI am deeply saddened for your loss.â
âIt shouldâve been me,â Melinda said. âIf Iâd have taken the first drink, youâd be burying me.â
âYouâre here for a reason,â Vicki said.
Melinda backed away. âI know why youâre being so nice. You want me to keep quiet about this place. But that would betray what Felicia and I were trying to do in the first place.â
Juddâs cell phone rang.
âI wonât stay here,â Melinda continued. âAnd you canât make me.â
Judd handed the phone to Mr. Stein as Melinda raced toward the schoolhouse. âTaylor Graham,â Judd said. âHe got the number from Boyd at the gas station. Said it was urgent.â
As Conrad and Lionel shoveled dirt into the grave, Judd approached Vicki. âSorry about Melinda. Guess weâre going to have to move.â
âI thought I was getting through to her,â Vicki said.
âMaybe you were,â Judd said. âPeople have to make their own choices.â
Mr. Stein snapped the phone shut, his face ashen. âIt is a miracle,â he said. âA true miracle of God. I am going to Israel. I am going to the Meeting of the Witnesses.â

JUDD couldnât believe it. Mr. Stein going to Israel?
âTaylor has access to a plane,â Mr. Stein said. âHe said there is an airfield near us.â
âYou know where he got that plane,â Judd said. âItâs GC property.â
âI thought Taylor didnât want anything to do with us,â Vicki said.
âHe knows I have money,â Mr. Stein said. âHe said he wants to keep his promise. I think he needs cash.â
âWait,â Judd said. âIf heâs going after Carpathia, why is he going to Israel? Nickâs not there.â
Mr. Stein shrugged. âPerhaps he will
