hide.â
âSooner or later theyâll catch you,â Vicki said.
Phoenix ambled over to Melinda and swished his tail back and forth. Soon he put his head on Melindaâs lap. She didnât even seem to notice.
Vicki turned the gun over in her hands. âIf you stayed, weâd offer you protection and food. They wouldnât find you.â
âIn return for â¦â
âEverybody pitches in,â Vicki said. âPlus, youâd attend our studies.â
âIâm not going to believe like you guys,â Melinda said. âEver.â
âMaybe not,â Vicki said. âBut you have to admit, itâs a better deal than Commander Blancka got.â
Phoenix nuzzled Melindaâs hand. The girl drew back. Phoenix licked the girlâs arm, and she put her hand back on Phoenixâs head.
Vicki handed the gun to Melinda and stood. âThis is yours.â She paused in the doorway. âThe guys will dig Feliciaâs grave at sunup. Weâll have the funeral in the afternoon. Weâd like you to be there.â
Melinda took the gun. âWhat if I take off tonight?â
That would change everything. Their lives would be thrown into turmoil. Vickiâs plans for the old schoolhouse would be wrecked.
âYour choice,â Vicki said. âIf you have to, you have to.â
Vicki closed the door, then opened it a crack. âIf you go, take blankets with you. Itâs going to be nippy tonight.â
Vicki put food and blankets by Melindaâs door and went to bed, listening for any sign of Melinda leaving. At midnight she opened her door and saw the food still in the hallway, but the blankets were gone.
âPlease, God,â Vicki said, âconvince her to stay.â
Vicki wrestled with leaving. Could God have brought them here only to have them abandon the place? Was the dream of training kids just thatâa dream?
The next morning Vicki found Judd and Mr. Stein in the kitchen.
âI see our guest is still here,â Judd said.
âHow do you know?â Vicki said.
âLooked in her window,â Judd said. He returned Vickiâs icy stare. âWe have a right to know if sheâs gone or not, donât we?â
âDonât blow this for me, Judd.â
Mr. Stein said, âThat girl has been through so much. I only hope we can get through to her before something happens to her.â
Mr. Stein used Juddâs laptop to log on to Tsion Ben-Judahâs Web site. Judd and Vicki ate in silence.
âThe rabbi writes about the Meeting of the Witnesses,â Mr. Stein said.
âStill scheduled for next week?â Vicki said.
âYes. And thousands of house churches have begunâ run by Jews who have become believers in Jesus as Messiah.â
âHouse churches,â Vicki said. âI like that. This is going to be a house church for the Young Tribulation Force.â
âItâs going to be more than that,â Judd said. âZ is going to run supplies through here and help feed people who wonât obey Carpathia.â
âWhat else does it say?â Vicki said.
âThe house churches base their teachings on Tsion Ben-Judahâs daily messages over the Internet,â Mr. Stein said. âThough the Global Community urges everyone to join the Enigma Babylon One World Faith, tens of thousands of such churches meet every day.
âTsion urges congregations to send their leaders to the great meeting, in spite of warnings from the GC. Nicolae Carpathia has tried again and again to cancel it.â
Mr. Stein scrolled through the message excitedly. âOh, listen to this! Dr. Ben-Judah writes, âWe will be in Jerusalem as scheduled, with or without your approval, permission, or promised protection. The glory of the Lord will be our rear guard.ââ
âHe called Carpathiaâs bluff,â Judd said.
âWe must get the generator started,â Mr. Stein
