answer is pink!â declared Grandpa Walt.
Starr burst in, âBut what color pink?â
He looked confused. âIsnât pink a color?â
âYes, but there are many shades of pink,â said Starr. âHot pink, ballet slipper pink, raspberry pink, cotton candy pink, bubblegum pinkâ¦â
âOkayâ¦â Grandpa Walt seemed even more confused than before. âBubblegum?â he asked.
âThatâs right!â Abuela gushed.
âLucky guess!â Ivy said. âQuestion number three: Whatâs your BFFâs favorite ice cream flavor?â
âMmm,â said Grandpa Walt. âI love ice cream! My favorite flavor is chocolate. Maybe Nina likes chocolate too?â
âNope!â Starr blurted out. âAbuela doesnât eat ice cream.â
âI donât like sweets,â said Abuela.
âReally?â murmured Grandpa Walt. âIâve never met anyone who doesnât like ice cream.â Grandpa Walt looked concerned. Starr didnât know if it was because Abuela didnât like dessert or because he was getting so many questions wrong.
âQuestion number four,â continued Ivy. âWhatâs your BFFâs middle name?â
Grandpa Waltâs head dropped. âI donât know.â
âI do!â Starr raised her hand as if she were in a classroom. âHer full name is Nina Rosarita Lopez!â
Grandpa Walt frowned.
âGrandpa, you failed the BFF quiz,â said Ivy.
Starr nodded. âI guess you donât know Abuela very well.â
Grandpa Walt turned to Abuela with sad eyes. âIâm sorry.â
Abuela took his hands.
âDonât worry, sweetie. We may not know everything about each other now, but we have plenty of time to learn. Think about how much fun that will be!â
Grandpa Walt smiled.
âI have an idea,â Abuela said. âLetâs get some ice cream.â
Starrâs and Ivyâs eyes widened.
âYou donât like ice cream!â said Grandpa Walt.
âBut you love it. Iâd like to try it again. Itâs part of getting to know you.â
Abuela looked at the girls. âWould you like to join us?â
Ivy and Starr were speechless. Their mouths were open, but no sound was coming out. Finally, Ivy muttered, âMaybe later.â
After the grandparents left, Ivy shook her head. âOur plan failed. They donât care that they barely know each other.â
Starr shrugged. Their plan may not have worked, but she thought it was sweet that Abuela would try ice cream for Grandpa Walt.
âWhat are we going to do now?â Ivy sounded desperate.
âWhat about swimming or ping-pong? Thereâs a lot to do on this ship.â Starr was ready to have some fun.
âThatâs it!â Suddenly, Ivy was digging through her bag. She pulled out papers from the shipâs

packet.
âIf Abuela is willing to try one of Grandpa Waltâs favorite things, then he should try something she likes too.â
âThat seems fair,â said Starr. She watched Ivy search through the papers.
âAha!â Ivy held up a colorful flyer. âLetâs show them how different they really are!â
Chapter Five
âWhatâs this?â asked Grandpa Walt, when Ivy handed him the flyer after lunch.
Abuela glanced at the paper. Her eyes lit up.
âItâs a cooking contest in the shipâs kitchen!â said Ivy. âThe winnerâs dish will be served to all the guests at dinner tonight!â
Grandpa Walt wrinkled his nose as he read the flyer. âA mole contest? Why would anyone want to eat food made out of squinty-eyed rodents? Yuck!â
Starr giggled. âItâs pronounced
moh-lay
. Itâs a Mexican sauce, and the main ingredient is chocolate. Itâs yummy!â
âI make the best mole,â said Abuela proudly.
âI bet you do!â Grandpa Walt smacked his
