angry, though. Which was unsettling. Erica rarely displayed much emotion at all. She was normally as calm and relaxed as a person at a day spa, even in the midst of a gunfight. But now she was so upset, it felt as though the room was heating up around her.
âThis decision was not made to be an insult to you,â Cyrus informed her. âIt was made because it is in the best interests of this country. If you canât handle that, Iâm sure we could find another student willing to be Benâs handler.â
Erica shifted her glare to her grandfather. âYou know thereâs no one here better than me.â
âWelcome aboard, then,â Cyrus said. âNow, hereâs the skinny: In a few weeks, the Shangs are actually leaving China for the first time in as long as weâve been tracking them. Better yet, theyâll be coming to the United States. Jessica Shang wants to learn how to ski.â
âThey canât do that in China?â the principal asked. âThey have snow there, donât they?â
âOf course they have snow,â Cyrus said curtly. âHowever, their resorts arenât nearly as good as ours yetâso Jessica wants to go to Colorado. Vail, to be specific. Theyâve already rented a hotel there andââ
âA hotel room,â I corrected.
âWhat?â Cyrus asked.
âYou said they rented a hotel ,â I told him. âInstead of a hotel room.â
âThat wasnât a mistake,â Cyrus snapped. âThey rented the entire hotel.â
âFor one family?â I asked, stunned.
âActually,â Alexander said, âMrs. Shang isnât coming. Weâre not sure why, but we suspect that sheâs even more secretive than her husband. Or maybe she just doesnât like cold weather.â
âSo they rented an entire hotel for only two people?â I asked, even more stunned.
âPlus their security staff, which is quite large,â Alexander explained. âLeo Shang doesnât like being around strangers. And like we said, heâs very rich.â
âStill,â Erica said, âif heâs so cautious, whyâs he coming to America at all? He must suspect the CIA is tracking him.â
âWeâve been wondering that ourselves,â Cyrus replied. âOur best guess is that the ski vacation is a cover for Operation Golden Fist.â
âSo this doesnât have anything to do with SPYDER?â I asked.
âWhy should it?â Cyrus replied, in a way that suggested my question had been idiotic.
âEr . . . ,â I stammered. âWell . . . SPYDERâs kind of our main enemy, isnât it? I mean, every time Iâve confronted an evil organization, itâs been that one. . . .â
âThe United States has lots of enemies,â Cyrus informed me. âIncluding hundreds youâve never heard of. And we havenât heard a peep out of SPYDER since their headquarters blew up. That was a huge setback for themâfinancially and organizationally. So perhaps thereâs a chance theyâre out of the game.â
âI guess,â I said, though I didnât believe it. SPYDER wasnât the type of evil organization that quit being evil after a few setbacks. And weâd never captured most of thehigh-ranking members. Or even figured out the real identities of any of them.
âNow, Leo Shang might be only one man,â Cyrus told me, âbut he controls an empire that appears to be just as powerful and dangerous as SPYDER. Perhaps even more powerful and dangerous. If he is truly plotting something with a Level Eleven potential for danger and destruction, there are many possible targets in the Rocky Mountains. The U.S. government has dozens of extremely critical facilities there: the headquarters for North American Aerospace Defense, Strategic Missile Command, the Air Force
