Aly up, and lifted an eyebrow as I stared down at my brother. âDid you guys watch anything other than The Avengers while I was at school?â
Jaggerâs eyes widened. âDo you want me to name all the Marvel movies?â
âNo need. I get it.â
The front door opened, and I turned to see Grey walking in with boxes of food.
I glanced quickly to the kitchen, but didnât see any food out. âI thought you were making breakfast,â I said to Jagger, accusation creeping through my tone.
He shrugged impishly as he walked away to help Grey. âHad to get you out of bed somehow.â
âBeing jumped on by a toddler would have done the job, you didnât need to make me worry about the safety of the building.â
âSheâs so dramatic in the mornings,â he mumbled as he took the boxes from his wife and passed a kiss across her forehead. Jaggerâs eyes narrowed as they darted over Greyâs face, and remained on her as he slowly stepped back toward the kitchen. âAnd you look extremely happy for someone who barely slept last night.â
I made a face. âEw.â
âNot like that!â Grey said quickly.
â Aly , Charlie.â Jagger shot me an annoyed look. âShe was up all night with Aly.â
âAnyway!â Grey took Aly from my arms, then swayed away from me. Her eyes were only for her daughter, but her singsong voice floated back to me. âFavor repaid, Charlie. Youâre welcome!â
âWhat favor?â When Grey didnât immediately answer because she was busy cooing at Aly, I thought of her excited smile, and wariness crept over me. âGrey . . . what favor?â
Her golden eyes danced when she nodded in Jaggerâs direction. âYou have a job now.â
Jagger held up his box-Âfilled hands. âI donât know why sheâs gesturing to me. I didnât do shit.â
Keithâs war cry announced his presence before I heard the sound of his slapping feet against the hard floor. âCheap shit!â
âWell, thatâs rude and so not appropriate, bud,â Grey murmured.
â Jagger ,â I bit out when he laughed loudly. âKeith, baby, itâs cheap shot .â
âThatâs what I said!â Keith said in exasperation as he slowed to climb up in a chair at the table, where Jagger was now laying out the food.
ÂâPeople are going to think I cuss around him all the time.â
Grey bit down on her bottom lip, but the corners of her mouth still lifted. âWe can just blame Jagger.â
âHeard that,â he called out without lifting his head.
âAgain, anyway ,â Grey began, drawing out the word. âI was talking to Mama while I was waiting for our food, and she mentioned needing another person or two at the café. I might have said something about you being back and in need of a job. One thing led to another, and . . . surprise?â she said uneasily when my face fell.
âYou got me a job at Mamaâs Café?â
âUh . . . yes?â When I didnât respond, she hurried to say, âIf you donât want to work there, you donât have to forever. But itâs something while you try to find a job somewhere in Thatch or around here. Or you donât have to work there at all; I can talk to Mama. I just thought since you pretty much got me the job at The Brew, I wouldâÂâ
âNo! No, itâs fine!â I said quickly, and smiled in an attempt to appease her. âI appreciate it, thank you. Youâre right; I need something and itâs always hit or miss with trying to find openings around here. So again, thank you.â
Grey still looked worried, like maybe sheâd done something she shouldnât have.
âI think working at Mamaâs will be great!â I said more sincerely. âIâll call down there after breakfast and see when she wants me to come
