into my room.
"You took a risk."
"Coming to your room this late at night? What?
Are you afraid your father saw me?" He seemed almost amused by the
idea of being caught sneaking into my room like some kind of horny
teenager.
"After Daddy kicks back his meds with that
bourbon chaser, he's out until morning. You could drive a freight
train through this house and he wouldn't know it." I shook my head.
"No, I meant the text message. That's evidence that can't be
erased."
He frowned. "You're an adult. I'm an adult.
This is consensual."
"It would still be a scandal. You know how
rabid the papers and the political bloggers can be. The
conservative party's hotshot fucking the barely legal daughter of a
defense contractor tycoon?" I sighed heavily. "They would eat that
up."
He shrugged and kept his expression cool. "I'm
not concerned."
I studied his face. "No, I don't think you
are."
"I'm entitled to a life. Who I sleep with is no
one's business but my own."
"I'm not sure your constituents would
agree."
"You let me worry about that." Jack extended
his hand. "Now come here."
"Not yet," I said and crossed my arms. "What
are we doing, Jack? I mean, what is this?"
"I thought we were going to make love. Isn't
that what we're doing?"
"But why? Why me?" I tried not to come right
out and say what truly concerned me. All evening, I'd been plagued
with second thoughts. I tried not to let self-doubt invade my mind
but I'd experienced enough heartache during high school to know men
could be sorry ass liars.
Jack tilted his head. "Do you think I'm here
with you because of your father?" He must have seen the uncertainty
in my face. "Bee?"
"It wouldn't be the first time a man used me to
get closer to my dad."
Aghast, he assured me, "This isn't quid pro
quo, Bee. My vote to fund defense contracts is not for sale. And
even if it was I sure as hell wouldn't be skin trading for it.
That's not how I work, Phoebe. "
I gauged his sincerity. Jack was good at
telling people what they wanted to hear but I could see the honesty
in his face. He wasn't blowing smoke up my ass. He meant what he'd
said. "I believe you, Jack."
"Good." He combed his fingers through his hair.
"I know we don't agree politically but I would never use a young
woman in that way. And especially not you," he added. "Never
you."
My eyes widened at the emotion he allowed to
fill his voice. "Especially me?"
He fixed me with that piercing gaze and my
belly trembled. "You know what I mean, Bee."
"How long?" I wondered aloud, my mind reeling
with his unexpected revelation. "How long have you been interested
in me?"
"Too long," he admitted with some reluctance.
"I tried to fight my attraction but you're a hard girl to forget.
Lusting after you when you were a cheerleader in high school is not
one of my prouder moments."
"Really?" I couldn't help but grin
triumphantly. "I probably shouldn't be excited by that confession
but I am."
Jack chuckled. "That's because we're on the
same wavelength."
"Maybe," I said with a cheeky smile. "But I'm
still not voting for you."
Jack laughed and reached for me. He dragged me
tight to his chest. "Let me see if I can change your
mind."
"Oh, I don't know, Congressman." I tapped his
cheek. "You're going to have to be awfully persuasive."
"Sugar, that sounds like a dare." He claimed my
mouth in a sensual kiss. I wound my arms around his neck and let
him have his way with me. His hands roamed my body as he devoured
my mouth. I mewled like a kitten as his tongue stabbed deep and his
big hands cupped my bottom. He gave my ass a playful squeeze and I
giggled against his mouth.
My fingers flicked through the buttons lining
his dress shirt. He toed off his shoes and kicked them aside. His
hands slipped under my camisole. He caressed my naked skin until I
shivered. Slowly, he peppered kisses along the side of my neck and
across my exposed collarbone and shoulder. I scratched my
fingernails against his scalp and lightly teethed his ear. The low
groan
