thought I was going
to get fucked on the exam table, someone knocked on the door.
    "Dr. Jeffries?" I heard
his secretary call. "Your first patient has arrived."
    "Shit," he hissed.
I tugged and worked my dress back
over my body. Dr. Jeffries took a step back. I nervously smoothed out my
appearance and pulled my panties on. Once my strappy heels were back on my feet
and I'd ascertained that my hair was in place, I followed him out.
    His secretary looked at us
askance as we both emerged from his exam room; I felt my face flush.
    "Rebecca, could you have
Abby fill out some paperwork? Just the standard Pap smear. And don't worry about insurance; she's a pharmaceutical rep."
    "Alright then," Rebecca
said, her eyes scanning me judgmentally.
I stared back at her defiantly.
Maybe she had a crush on Dr. Jeffries. She was pretty cute, a petite, nerd-hot
little thing with dyed red hair and spotless porcelain skin.
    "Thanks," I said,
picking up the clipboard of paperwork she shoved my way. "It was really
nice of Dr. Jeffries to check me out on such short notice."
    She didn't say anything and
turned back to her computer instead. Her long blue nails flickered across the
keyboard efficiently.
    After filling out the necessary
paperwork I handed the clipboard back, still feeling hot and embarrassed.
Rebecca wrote something on the back of a business card and handed it over to
me. I looked at it, expecting to read a catty remark or insult.
    Instead, Dr. Jeffries cellphone
number was written there in perfect cursive.
    "Don't mention it,"
Rebecca said flatly before coolly turning her attention to her computer once
again.

I sat nervously at the cafe
table, reaching for my phone every few minutes to check whether Dr. Jeffries
had called or sent a message. I felt like a nervous wreck.
I postponed my flight back east
until the following day, and I just had one more night in Phoenix before I had
to leave. I didn't know how to feel about what Dr. Jeffries and I had done in
his office. Maybe he already got what he wanted. Or maybe he was just like all
the other doctors and thought I was a dumb blonde bimbo not worth calling.
    Still no calls.
    I sighed, suddenly feeling a
little foolish. I let my infatuation with a stranger get the best of me. It was
now past one o'clock. If he wanted to call me over his lunch break he would
have already.
I paid my bill and left.
Maybe I'd splash around in the
hotel pool for a little, then head back upstairs to
catch up on sleep. I groaned and stretched before getting back inside my rental
car.
    Sure, the disappointment stung,
but I was a tough girl, and I could deal with it.
The hotel pool was all beautiful
bodies and cold drinks. I swam a few laps, getting nice and tired before I
caught some rays. I decided I was okay with Dr. Jeffries not calling me back;
even if I didn't see him and it was totally awkward next time I came on a sales
trip. I needed a day to relax anyway, and doing so in Phoenix, on the company's
dollar, was just fine with me. I decided I'd take myself out somewhere nice
tonight and enjoy myself. Who cared if people looked at me weird at the
restaurant?
I laid a towel on a pool lounger
and watched as some hunky-looking guys walked into the pool area. They were
bronze, ripped, and shallow looking. In other words,
douchebags. Just the type that always went for me.
I rolled over and let the sun
kiss my back, looking the opposite way of the men who had just arrived. The
moment one of them caught your eye it was always a pain to get them to leave
you alone. And the colder and bitchier I was, the more they always took it as a
challenge.
    "Damn girl," one of
them said as they walked past, "you got a fine ass."
    "A fine ass,"
another stressed.
    Oh God—was that all they
had? They were even douchier than I imagined. I ignored them without saying a
word. When they settled into the pool and their conversation was finally out of
earshot, I dozed off.
I awoke with a start an hour
later, feeling the
