being dead, you know.â
âI think we should all go home and get some rest,â I recommended. âItâs been a long day and weâre all on edge. Weâll meet back here tomorrow to resume training.â
âSounds like a good idea.â Brian put his arm around Dorothyâs shoulders. âHow about dinner, beautiful?â
âI think Mollyâs right,â Dorothy said, surprisingly stern about it. âI think we should each go home and get some rest. Iâm exhausted. Iâll see you tomorrow.â
âOkay.â His smile vanished. âIâll be here. Just donât take off with your dad without telling me, okay?â
âWhat do you mean?â Olivia asked. âDorothyâs not going anywhere with Drago. Iâve told her what heâs really like. She knows better. She wouldnât do anything like that after all I went through to keep her safe.â
âDonât take this the wrong way,â he replied, âbut I know what itâs like to have relatives who are uber powerful and want to lead you astray. It can be very seductive.â
He and Olivia stared at Dorothy as though she was a specimen they were about to dissect.
âIâm not going anywhere with Drago,â she denied. âI mean, sure he was captivating and knows everything after being alive so long. No telling what he could teach me andthe wonders of the world that he could show me.â She took a deep breath. âBut Iâm not interested.â
Brian appeared unconvinced. Olivia looked tearful and uncertain.
âReally,â Dorothy continued, âIâm not interestedâat least not enough to run away with him. Maybe to have lunch with him. Or drinks. Or something. What? Heâs my father. I canât just ignore him even if he is evil.â
Dorothy said good night and picked up her motherâs staff so that Oliviaâs ghost would accompany her. It was the only thing that tethered Olivia to her earthly form. Olivia had collected runes for itâshe was an air witchâfor many years. Dorothy, an earth witch, was only able to wield her motherâs staff because they were blood relatives. Dorothyâs own tool was a piece of emerald cull.
As soon as they were out the door, Brian turned to me and Elsie.
âIâm not gonna get a wink of sleep worrying about her. I might as well hang around their house until we find out whatâs going on. I wish I wouldnât have found an apartment already. I could still be living with them. You two want to take shifts on this or what?â
âI really think this is Dorothyâs decision,â Elsie said. âLike you said, many witches have powerful, seductive friends and relatives who could lead them astray. She has to figure this out for herself.â
âBut she doesnât have the background for it,â he argued. âI grew up in the Fuller family with the Grand Council breathing down my neck and my parents trying to tell me what I should do. Dorothy doesnât have that experience. And she trusts everyone.â Brian, an air witch, took out his wand.
âI think Elsieâs right,â I agreed with her. âWe canât actively interfere, as much as we might like to. But the three of us could put a locator spell on her so that if he doesmanage to convince her to leave, we could find her. It would give us the chance to talk some sense into her.â
âOkay.â He nodded. âLetâs do that. Iâm not giving her up without a fight.â
âThatâs the spirit.â Elsie patted him on the back. âYou have to fight for what you want. Look at me and Larry. We couldnât even be together if it was up to other witches and the council.â
Elsie was a fire witch. She took out her sword and repeated an incantation for power.
I was a water witchâthe most powerful among us as far as elements went. Wilmington was in a
