dorm will go to Preppy Prep Prep for a week.â
âMy bags are packed, sir,â I said. I held up mymachine. âMaybe youâd like to save time and pick the winner now.â
The Upchuck ignored me. âNyce House will go first,â he said. âTell us about your dormâs invention, Sherman.â
Sherman stepped forward. He smiled his perfect smile at the judges. He held his invention in one hand. It glowed in the spotlight.
âItâs a solid platinum cell phone,â he said.
âVery good, soldier,â said Mr. Skruloose. âThatâs a beauty. How did you make it?â
âI didnât make it,â Sherman replied. âMy parents bought it for me. Itâs worth five thousand dollars.â
Mrs. Heinie squinted at it through her thick glasses. âOh, my. You mean you didnât invent it?â
Sherman shook his head. âNo. But thatâs not the important part. Let me tell you the important part.â
Headmaster Upchuck scratched his bald head. âImportant part?â
Sherman nodded. âIâm going to sell the platinum and give all the money to you three judges!â he said.
A grin spread over Headmaster Upchuckâs pink face. âOh. Very good,â he said. âVery good invention,Sherman. I like it!â
âSoldier, I never take bribes,â Skruloose said. âBut youâve won me over with this one. I salute you!â He gave a snappy, two-fingered salute. âVery clever, soldier. Excellent!â
Mrs. Heinie was smiling, too. âI think we have a winner,â she said. âBut letâs see what the girls invented.â
April-May June stepped to one side of the stage with her friend Sharonda Davis. They pulled out a HUGE machine, about eight feet tall. It had pipes and coils and electrical wires, and two long arms with metal pinchers at their ends.
April-May and Sharonda walked offstage and came back pushing a small bed. They lined it up next to the machine.
âLet me show you how this works,â Sharonda said. She pushed a button on the machine, and the two pincher-arms started to move.
âOur invention makes the bed for you in the morning,â April-May said. âLook. It even fluffs up the pillow.â
The two arms straightened the bedcovers. Thenthey fluffed the pillow.
âWatch carefully,â Sharonda said. âWhen the machine is finished, it folds up and becomes a couch.â
The machine folded in on itself. A huge cushion slid up. The two girls sat down on the couch.
The auditorium roared with applause.
âPretty good,â Headmaster Upchuck said. âPretty good.â
âNot as good as Shermanâs phone,â Skruloose said. âOf course, the money heâs going to give us has nothing to do with my decision.â
Sherman ran over and pushed another hundred-dollar bill into Skrulooseâs shirt pocket.
âWe should stop here,â Mrs. Heinie said. âBut I suppose we have to see what my Rotten House boys have done.â
Skruloose motioned to me. âStand at attention, soldier. Show us your invention.â
âOh, wow. Itâs showtime. Here goes,â I said. âWish me luck, dudes.â
Chapter 8
AN INSIDE-OUT NOSE
I stepped to the front of the stage. âIâd like to start out by singing the Preppy Prep Prep school song,â I said. âI learned it because I know that my friends and I will be going there right after we win the contest.â
I took a deep breath and started to sing.
â Where does everyone keep in step, step, step?
At Preppy Prep Prepâ¦Preppy Prep Prep⦠â
Some kids started to hiss and boo. Guys screamed for me to stop. Fights broke out.
âSOLDIER, JUST SHOW US THE INVENTION!â Skruloose bellowed, waving a fist in the air.
âThe invention?â I said. âBut I have six more verses of the song.â
âBOOOOOO!â
âOkay, okay. Here it
