head.
âAnyway, we managed to persuade him that it wasnât ,â Nadia hastily emphasized, âand Laurie finally agreed to go up for the final. Mainly to shut me up, I think. But when he met the organizers and found out how much money he could make, he realized it might be worth making the effort after all. So then he won the competition and that was it, the agency put him on their books and the whole thing took off like a rocket. Before, heâd been training as a stockbroker and hating every minute. Now heâs traveling all over the world doing magazine shoots and ad campaigns. Itâs just brilliant, a whole new career.â
âThanks to you,â Jay said mildly. He paused. âEver regret it?â
Nadia had heard this question before. About a thousand times.
âWhy would I regret it? Weâre still together, Laurie hasnât changed. We might not see as much of each other as before, but he comes back whenever he can. We still love each other. And itâs not going to last forever, we both know that. By the time you hit thirty, youâre well and truly over the hill.â There, slipped it in, just in case Jay was still hankering after a change of career. âIf my phone was working, I could speak to him now,â Nadia went on. âWe talk to each other all the time. Heâs been in Egypt for the last few days, shooting an ad campaign for Earl jeans.â
Jay looked mildly skeptical. âAnd you trust him?â
It wasnât the first time sheâd been asked this one either.
âOf course I do. One hundred percent.â
âHow about him? Does he trust you?â
âLaurie knows Iâd never cheat on him.â Smiling to herself, Nadia plumped up her pillow and changed the subject. âAnyway, your turn now. Tell me all about your boyfriend.â
The candle on the bedside table flickered, sending an eddy of shadows across the wall.
âActually, Iâm not gay,â said Jay.
Oh for heavenâs sake.
âSo why did you tell me you were?â
âTo relax you.â His eyes were bright with amusement. âAnd it worked.â
âThatâs cheating,â Nadia groaned. âI trusted you. You lied to me.â
âWhat can I say? Iâm a man, itâs what we do.â
Hang on, was he insinuating something about Laurie? Nadia bristled. âIf thatâs meant to be some kind of digââ
âOK, Iâm sorry.â Laughing, Jay held up his hands. âBut it did calm you down, didnât it? You stopped panicking about spending the night in bed with a strange man who might try to seduce you.â
âAnd now you tell me you arenât gay after all. Wouldnât it have made more sense to carry it on? You could at least have waited until the morning before telling me you were straight.â
âI was going to. Until you asked me about my boyfriend. Anyway, you donât have to worry,â said Jay. âIâm still not going to even try to seduce you. So youâre perfectly safe.â
âRight. Well, thatâs good.â Nadia wriggled down into her sleeping bag, affecting indifference but secretly wishing he could have invented a boyfriend. She preferred him gay. Just because sheâd never be unfaithful to Laurie didnât mean she couldnât be attracted to a good-looking man.
âYou could ask me about my girlfriend if you like,â Jay prompted.
âGo on then, tell me about her.â
He winked. âWe broke up a couple of months ago.â
Typical.
âSee?â Nadia heaved a sigh. âYouâre doing it already. You wouldnât have said that if youâd still been gay.â
âWouldnât have had a girlfriend to break up with,â Jay reminded her. âOh, come on, donât get all defensive. I said I wouldnât try to seduce you, didnât I?â
âBut now youâre flirting with me,â Nadia
