now.â
At that moment, Dr. Scott walked out to the waiting room with a girl holding a small dog with a bandage on its paw.
âAnd make sure she stays off that paw,â Dr. Scott said.
âThank you, Dr. Scott,â said the girl. She and the dog went out.
Dr. Scott saw the Aldens and greeted them. âSo you have a cat now, too?â she asked, seeing the sign Violet was holding.
âOh, no,â said Violet. âThe cat belongs to someone else. Weâre just helping find her.â
âYou can put the sign up on the wall over there.â Dr. Scott pointed. âIâll keep an eye out for her, too. Good luck.â
âThank you,â said Henry. âBy the way, Dr. Scott â has anyone else been in looking for a missing cat? A spotted one like Spotzie?â
Dr. Scott shook her head. âNo one.â A man came into the waiting room with a large, shaggy dog bouncing at the end of a leash. âWell, I need to get back to work. Good luck again.â
The Aldens put the sign up on the wall and went back outside.
âLunchtime?â said Benny hopefully.
âNot quite, Benny,â said Jessie. She looked back over her shoulder, but the mysterious stranger had not reappeared. âWe need to go see if Mr. Woods has a picture of Spotzie. That would help our search.â
The Aldens rode their bicycles over to Mr. Woodsâs house. This time, when they got there, Mrs. Valentine opened the door when Henry knocked.
She smiled. âHello,â she said. âCome in.â She led the way to the kitchen. A short young woman with lots of curly red hair was sitting at the kitchen table.
âThis is my niece, Whitney,â said Mrs. Valentine. âWhitney, these are the Aldens: Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny.â
âHow nice,â said Whitney.
âItâs nice to meet you, too,â said Henry politely.
âI just made some cookies,â said Mrs. Valentine.
âCookies? I like cookies,â said Benny.
Mrs. Valentine laughed. âI know you do, Benny. Mrs. McGregor has told me. Maybe youâd like some cookies now?â
âYes, thank you,â said Benny, promptly sitting down at the kitchen table.
Everyone laughed. While Henry helped pour milk into glasses, Jessie and Violet joined Benny and Whitney.
âWeâve been looking for Spotzie,â Jessie told Whitney.
âOh yes. Mr. Woodsâs cat. Iâve been hearing about her from my aunt. Any luck?â asked Whitney.
âNot yet,â said Henry as he gave each of the Aldens a glass of cold milk. âWeâve made some signs and put them up at the animal shelter and at Dr. Scottâs veterinary office and around town.â
Mrs. Valentine put a plate of cookies warm from the oven in the middle of the table, and she and Henry sat down, too. âItâs very strange that the little cat disappeared like that off the front porch,â Mrs. Valentine said.
âMaybe a dog came by and chased her off the porch while Mr. Woods was inside,â suggested Whitney.
âA dog! We never thought of that,â said Henry. âWe thought she might have seen something and chased it and gotten herself lost somehow.â
âAn interesting theory,â said Whitney, with a little smile. âYou children are real detectives, arenât you?â
Benny didnât seem to notice Whitneyâs amused smile. âYes,â he said, reaching for another cookie. âWeâve solved a lot of mysteries. Do you want to help?â
âIâm kind of busy,â said Whitney, raising her eyebrows. âIâm afraid you children will have to solve the mystery without my help.â
Jessieâs face turned red at Whitneyâs tone, but she didnât say anything. Instead, she turned to Mrs. Valentine. âWe were wondering if Mr. Woods had a photograph of Spotzie. We want it to show to people.â
âIâm sure he
