âBefore you make any more clever deductions, young man, I have some chocolate cake in the kitchen for both of you.â Despite her tart manner, she was very fond of her nephews and liked to spoil them with her excellent cooking.
Some time later, the phone rang. It was Chief Collig. âI have the FBI report on that second fingerprint,â he told Joe, who had answered the call. âIt belongs to a man named Ignaz Nitron. He once did time for burglary, and was last seen on Key Blanco. â
âKey Blanco!â Joe exclaimed. âThatâs where Wester sent his painting! Thanks, Chief.â
He hung up and reported the new development to the others.
âIâve heard of Nitron,â Fenton Hardy stated. âHeâs suspected of running a smuggling ring, but heâs never been caught with the goods. Stealing the picture from the Wester home is the kind of thing heâd be involved in. Since itâs a portrait of Si-m 6n BolÃvar, he could easily find a wealthy buyer in Latin America.â
âThe initials on the jackknife must be his!â Frank said excitedly. âPerhaps he dropped the knife when he helped carry the picture through the secret passage to the driveway!â
Joe looked puzzled. âBut whatâs a crook from Key Blanco doing in Bayport?â
âMaybe Harrison Wester talked about the portrait and Nitron heard about it,â Frank theorized. âSo he came to Bayport and grabbed it.â
âProbably with the help of Morphy,â Joe added. âAnd there might be a third crook. Morphy supposedly hired two couriers.â
âNow donât jump to conclusions,â his father warned. âNitron, perhaps with the help of an accomplice, could have gotten rid of Morphy and planted your photograph in Westerâs desk.â
âI doubt it,â Joe said. âWhy would Morphy give the staff the day off unless he had something to hide?â
Mr. Hardy nodded slowly. âYou have a point there. Anyway, itâs a real puzzler. Your best bet is to go to Key Blanco and start investigating.â
âWeâll go underground and pose as smugglers,â Frank suggested. âHopefully weâll run into Nitron. â
âAnd weâll keep an eye out for Morphy, too,â Joe added.
Fenton Hardy approved of the plan. However, he warned the boys to be careful.
Just then the phone rang again. Frank picked it up. It was Raymond Wester, so the young detective motioned for Joe to pick up the extension.
âIâm at the Bayport Hotel!â Wester declared irritably. âWhy arenât you boys here yet?â
âWhy should we be, Mr. Wester?â Frank asked, perplexed.
âBecause you asked me to meet you here!â the art collector snapped.
âButâwe havenât talked to you since we left your home!â Frank protested. âWe never mentioned the Bayport Hotel.â
âFrank Hardy, you phoned about an hour ago,â Wester accused him. âI expected you and Joe to be here. I thought you might have found my painting. Iâm in room 707. â
Frank was mystified. Instead of arguing the point over the telephone, he just said, âOkay, weâll be right over.â
âWhere did he get the idea you asked him to go to the hotel?â Joe wondered.
âSomeone called him and imitated my voice,â Frank said grimly. âCome on, weâll have to check this out!â
Both boys were rushing toward the door when Mr. Hardy called them back. âYouâll have to look into this, I agree,â the detective said. âBut be very careful. You might be lured straight into a trap!â

Frank nodded thoughtfully. âYouâre right,â he said. âIf weâre not back in half an hour, come after us, will you?â
âI sure will,â his father promised, and the boys went out.
When they reached the Bayport Hotel, the desk clerk
