maintain a calm expression and not show how excited I am to see Keller again. “Of course, I will be there, Rach. Just text me what time you are going and we can head out together, ok?” She nods and says, “Sounds good, Athena.”
Now Rachel has the same interest as me of catching an athlet e that is going somewhere. We’ve never really talked a lot about it unless we’re really drunk, but I know from those conversations that we both share the same type. She’s had a long-term boyfriend that played baseball and got a contract with the Cincinnati Cardinals. He broke up with her before he left though because he didn’t think they could do long distance. She was devastated, I could tell, but didn’t say much about it at the end of last year. She is richer middle class so I’m not sure what her draw to this life is. For me, I want a man to be capable of taking care of me instead of me taking care of him like my mom and dad. I never want to be stuck in the nightmare of my mother’s life that I witnessed for my first eighteen years.
As I walk back to my dorm, I think about the fact that I’m going to be at Keller’s apartment tonight and how excited that makes me. I know he’s in love with another girl, but I am just not really bothered by this since she’s not in love with him. Carter seems to be a girl that knows her own mind so if she’d wanted to be with Keller she would be. I wonder how to get him to really see me. He talked to me today, and I could tell that I managed to annoy him. But he was still watching Carter the entire time we were conversing. That had to stop, if I was going to get him successfully interested in me.
Carter didn’ t seem like a prude when it came to how she dressed, and he was obviously attracted to her. Good thing, since my party wardrobe was all short skirts or dresses with high heels. I would try to bring the wow factor and see how he reacted tonight. I walk into my dorm room and see my roommate sitting on her bed with her face in her book. Rachel and I had applied to become roommates but for some reason there was a mix-up, and it didn’t work out. Now I think that might have been a good thing since we are more superficial friends who might not have done well with living together.
“Hey, Addison, what are you reading? Classes haven’t even started yet.” “Just reading for fun.” She said with a smile and a shrug. “Oh, that’s nice. Well, I’m going to get ready for a party so I’ll be out of the room for most of tonight.” She just smiled and nodded and went back to reading her book. I think she and I are going to get along fine. She looks pretty average with shorter brown hair and a round face. She is obviously a bookworm who wants to spend more time reading than anything else. I love books too, but not at the beginning of school when there is a party to go to.

I spend about two hours getting ready for tonight. The party starts at ten, and Rachel and I want to be there before the place gets too packed to even be noticed or talk to anybody. So we are going to arrive right around the time it starts. Rach texts me that she is in front of my dorm, and I run down to her car. She has a beat up old Saturn but at least she has a car. My transportation consists of the bus system or rides from friends. I got scholarships to come here and took out student loans. I could never afford a car and college, but I waitress at a wings place down the street four nights just to pay for clothes and food. My budget is beyond tight but I’m going to get an education. That is something that I’d promised myself a long time ago. I would have a career to support myself. Watching my mom struggle for so long made
