Dane.â She barely spared him a glance, and Mariel had the fleeting thought that life had gone on here as usual while sheâd been away. Phoebe leaned in and murmured, âKyle just rang. He wants to meet me. Now.â
Mariel stared at her sister, incredulous. âAnd you agreed? What happened to your New Yearâs resolution?â
Phoebe bit her lip. âI know, I know, butâ¦â
âDonât let him call the shots, Pheebes.â
âI wonât. But Iâve got to meet him halfway, donât I?â
Mariel raised a brow at the gleam in Phoebeâs over-bright eyes. âAnd whereâs that?â
âUmâ¦a spot we like to go. Oh, and in case I donât see you, I wonât be around when you get up. Iâm on an early-morning flight to Melbourne. Thereâs a music festival on. So Iâve asked Brad Johnston to drop you home. You remember Brad; heâs keen to catch up with you again.â
âAhâ¦â Stomach sinking, she glanced over Phoebeâs shoulder, saw the familiar fuzzy-haired guy weaving his way through the crowd. More than keen, if Mariel wasnât mistaken.
âYou two came together?â Dane asked.
âYeah, my wonderful sister came to keep me companyâ¦umâ¦because Kyle couldnât make it. You donât mind, do you, Mari?â
âOf course not, but I think you should considerââ
âNo need to bother Brad,â Dane cut in, his voice disturbingly deep, disturbingly close. âItâs all arranged, Iâm taking Mariel home.â
CHAPTER TWO
âO H ? O KAY ⦠butâ¦â Phoebeâs eyes darted between the two of them.
âIâll let Brad know,â he told her.
âOkay. Thanks, Dane. See ya later, sis.â Phoebe pecked Marielâs cheek and was gone in a whirlwind of pink and perfume.
âArranged?â Mariel muttered, glaring at him while every internal organ traded places.
âWait here,â he ordered, and was gone before she could utter another word of protest.
Hardly. But she stood immobile, feet stapled to the floor, while she watched him dispatch Brad in less than five seconds. Why werenât her legs moving? Why wasnât she getting the heck away before it was too late?
Dane could tell Mariel was unsettled by the sudden turn of events as he made his way back. Her eyes glinted dangerously, that beautiful mouth a slash of coral in her pale face. But, he noted with satisfaction, sheâd made no attempt to disappear amongst the guests.
âI was hoping to leave early,â she said the moment he reached her side. Setting her cup down, she unzipped the diamante bag that swung from her shoulder. âAboutnow, in fact. I wouldnât want to spoil the evening for you. You probably came with someoneâ¦â She pulled out her mobile. âIâll call a cab.â
âI told you. Iâm taking you home. And itâs not a problem; I came alone.â
âOhâ¦â He saw her register that fact as her eyes clashed with his again.
Not a problem? Dane gave himself a mental slap on the forehead. They had unfinished business that went back ten years. To a night of youthful passion on a girly patterned quilt, the night-cooled fragrance wafting inside on the moonbeams.
Then a very ugly end outside his fatherâs garage.
Not a matter that could be sorted out tonight, Dane knew, but heâd taken one look at Brad and some sort of proprietorial instinct had kicked in.
âBut youâll want to stay, enjoyâ¦â She waved a carefully manicured hand. âWhateverâ¦â
âIâm ready to leave when you are.â
âVery well,â she said with quiet formality, her spine rigid. âThank you. Iâd like to leave now, if thatâs okay. My body clockâs still on Greenwich Mean Time.â
âWeâll say our goodbyes, then.â He placed a hand on the small of her back.
