this was the moment, Art had been waiting for.
âI found out about your cast,â said Art. âThe chemist told me. About $130 if you count the doctorâs fee.â
âToo much,â interrupted Mario.
âBut the actual plaster only costs fifteen,â said Art quickly
âFifteen from fifty leaves thirty five. We could borrow all the other props,â said India.
âIf the cast is part of your body, it shouldnât count,â argued Art.
âI agree,â said Mrs. Tasker. âYouâre allowed to use parts of your body. Indiaâs cast is part of her body at the moment. So that doesnât count in the budget.â
âWhat about crutches?â Mario was suspicious.
âAllowable,â ruled Mrs. Tasker. âLike watches or glasses or an artificial eye.â
âHeart transplant?â Mario wasnât giving up easily.
Mrs. Tasker nodded.
âOkay. Letâs start.â India was relieved.
Mrs. Tasker looked closely at Marioâs handwriting on Indiaâs cast. âPerhaps you should change this, Mario. I taught in Italy for a year. My husband used to work there. I can read Italian.â
Mario blushed.
You donât need me then?â Art said quickly. âNot if Indiaâs in the team?â
âYes we do.â India was firm. âJoâs gone. That leaves six with me. And we need your ideas.â
âBe an understudy. In case someone breaks their neck,â Rae suggested.
Art hadnât asked the chemist the cost of neck braces.
India said:â Read the problemâ¦erâ¦Iâll tell you. About the missing emerald and diamond ring.
One ring to rule them all,
One ring to find them,
One ring to bring them all,
And in the darkness bind them.
We have to act out something that will explain all these.â
âHow do emeralds and diamonds ring?ââ Art was puzzled.
âI mean the sort of ring you wear.â
âDo they mean that? â asked Art. âThe TOM judges?â
âOh, forget it!â said Mario.
âNo.â Mrs. Tasker put her hand on Artâs shoulder. âTry out any ideas you like. Thatâs what Tournament is about: Thinking sideways. Using mindspace.â
Art remembered what his mum had said to him. âA ring! The mobile is a different kind of ring.â
â Youâre right,â admitted India. âPerhaps we can do something with a phone ring?â
Art remembered the bird in the art room. âWhat about a ring on a birdâs leg? To carry messages? âSuddenly Art was enjoying himself .As long as he didnât have to read, he liked playing with ideas.
âAce idea, Art.â India read from the booklet. âWe need a truck driver, a ghost, a detective and a character of the ring. They have to act in the performance.â
âA ringmaster,â suggested Art who was picturing shows and circuses.â A ringmaster looks after the animals in the circus ring. â
âA girl ringmaster,â suggested India quickly. âWho stands in the middle, without moving her leg.â
Later, the two teams went out for a pizza, Mrs. Taskerâs shout.
âThanks Mrs. T.â
âCoach,â she corrected.
âBy the way Mars Bar,â India pointed to the writing on her cast. âI looked this up in the Italian-English dictionary online.â
Art looked at Mario whose face was like tomato-sauce.
âI fixed up the spelling,â smiled India. âYou did mean to say âget wellâ didnât you?â
Mario just mumbled something.
Art thought he just might hang around. The pizza was okay. Thick with gooey cheese. It smelt spicy, and Art ate five slices. Another good thing was that Mrs.Tasker let him stop the night at her place. It was an emergency. His dad was away driving interstate and his mum was on night shift. Mrs. Next-Door had to go to hospital. Staying at Mrs. Takerâs gave him another
