âCarly!â she called. âThereâs a present for all of us in the mail!â
That brought her running.
Soon, the four of them were tearing the paper off. Abby opened the lid.Shawn, Jimmy, and Carly leaned closer.
Abby held up the gift. âItâs a puzzle piece.â
âWith words on it,â Carly said.
Jimmyâs face wrinkled up. âThat not present.â
Abby stared at the puzzle piece. âI canât see all the words. Somethingâs missing.â
Shawn and Carly each took a turn looking at the puzzle piece. âWho sent us this?â Carly asked.
âI donât know,â Abby said. âItâs a mystery.â
Shawn laughed. âA mystery in the mailbox!â
Just then, the doorbell rang.
Carly ran to get it.
It was Stacy. âLook what I got in the mail.â She held up a puzzle piece.
Abby studied it. âYou got one, too?â
The doorbell rang again.
It was Eric and Jason this time.
âSomeone put puzzle pieces in our mailboxes,â Eric said.
Jason danced around when he saw Abbyâs piece. And Stacyâs. âHey! Maybe they fit together!â
The kids knelt down on the floor. Stacy and Eric moved their pieces around. They didnât fit Jasonâs piece. So they switched.
âWait. . .â Abby laughed as Stacyâs piece snapped into hers. âThis is double dabble good!â
Carly giggled. âLetâs see if Dunkum and Dee Dee got puzzles, too.â
âGood idea,â the kids said. They picked up their puzzle pieces and dashed out the front door.
ELEVEN
The Cul-de-sac Kids met Dunkum coming up the street. He was waving his present in the air.
Right there on the sidewalk, they tried to put the puzzle together.
âLook at that!â Abby said. âWeâre missing one piece.â
Shawn tried to read the words. âIt say something about usâthe Cul-de-sac Kids!â
The kids leaned over the puzzle. Their heads almost touched.
âYouâre right,â Abby said. She smiled at Carly. âWhy donât you go find Dee Dee?â
Carly leaped up. âOkay!â She ran down the street to Dee Deeâs house.
Zippo! Dee Dee flew out of her house. She checked her mailbox.
Abby and the others watched.
Dee Dee smiled when she spotted the present.
Carly was standing close by. She whispered in Dee Deeâs ear and pointed to the other Cul-de-sac Kids.
Dee Dee let out a âYa-hoo!â She scurried down Blossom Hill Lane. Toward them.
Abby and the rest of the kids circled around her.
Dee Dee looked at the unfinished puzzle and set her piece down. Right in the middle.
It fit!
â Now we can read it,â said Abby.
The kids read out loud. âThe Cul-de-sac Kids stick together.â
They looked at one another. Really looked.
Abby smiled and gave Carly a hug. Then Jimmy came over and hugged Abby.
Soon everyone was hugging.
Except Jason. He was dancing! âWe stick . . . stick . . . stick together,â he sang the words.
â Now we do!â Abby said.
The kids cheered.
âWho gave us these puzzle presents?â Dunkum asked.
âI donât know,â Dee Dee said.
âMe neither,â Carly said. The two girls giggled.
Abby called a meeting right there on the spot. âThe meeting will now come to order,â she said. âAny old business?â
The kids grinned. âForget the old stuff,â they shouted.
Eric raised his hand. âWe have a mystery to solve.â
Stacy nodded. âWe sure do!â
Abby called for a vote.
Nine hands flew up.
It was agreedâthe Cul-de-sac Kids would play detectives.
âWhat about Mailbox Mania?â Dee Dee asked. âArenât we having a contest?â
âThatâs tomorrow,â Carly told her. â Today we have something else to do!â
Abby gathered up the puzzle pieces and stuck them in her pocket. She fell in step with Stacy and Eric.
