surprised.
âCome in, then,â Buckmaster said, waving both men inside. Once heâd closed the big door behind them, he asked, âNow whatâs this about Bo?â
âI was just talking to one of the wranglers,â Cooper said, jumping in ahead of Jace. âBo apparently left Saturday afternoon on horseback, saying sheâd be back this morning, but she hasnât returned.â
âThatâs what I heard, as well,â Jace said, taking the opening. âI need to know where she might have gone.â
Both Buckmaster and Cooper looked to him. âYou sound as if youâre planning to go after her,â the senator said.
âI am.â
âWhy would you do that? I didnât think you two were seeing each other?â Cooper asked like the protective brother-in-law he was.
âWeâre not,â Jace said.
âWait a minute,â the senator said. âYouâre the one who stood her up for the senior prom. Iâll never forget it. My baby cried for weeks.â
Jace nodded. âThat would be me.â
âBut youâve dated Bo more recently than senior prom,â Buckmaster was saying.
âFive years ago,â he said. âBut that doesnât have anything to do with this. I have my reasons for wanting to see Bo come back. My sister works at the foundation.â
âWhy wouldnât Bo come back?â the senator demanded.
Behind him, Angelina made a disparaging sound. âBecause thereâs money missing from the foundation along with your daughter.â She looked at Jace. âYou said your sister works down there?â
He smiled, seeing that she was clearly judgmental of the âkind of peopleâ Bo had hired to work at the foundation. âMy sister doesnât have access to any of the money, if thatâs what youâre worried about.â He turned to the senator again. âThe auditor is down at the foundation office, trying to sort it out. Bo needs to be there. I thought you might have some idea where she might have gone in the mountains. I thought Iâd go find her.â
The senator looked to his son-in-law. Cooper shrugged.
âCooper, you were told she planned to be back today?â her father said. âShe probably changed her mind or went too far, not realizing how long it would take her to get back. If she had an appointment today with an auditor, Iâm sure sheâs on her way as we speak.â
âOr sheâs hiding up there and doesnât want to be found,â Angelina quipped from the couch. âIf she took that money, she could be miles from here by now.â She groaned. âItâs always something with your girls, isnât it?â
âI highly doubt Bo has taken off with any foundation money,â the senator said and shot his wife a disgruntled look. âEvery minor problem isnât a major scandal,â he said and sighed, clearly irritated with his wife.
When he and Bo had dated, sheâd told him that her stepmother was always quick to blame her and her sisters no matter the situation. As far as Jace could tell, there was no love lost on either side.
âMaybe we should call the sheriff,â Cooper said.
Angelina let out a cry. âThatâs all we needâmore negative publicity. It will be bad enough when this gets out. But if search and rescue is called in and the sheriff has to go up there... For all we know, Bo could be meeting someone in those mountains.â
Jace hadnât considered she might have an accomplice. âThatâs why Iâm the best person to go after her.â
âHow do you figure that?â Cooper demanded, giving him a hard look.
âShe already doesnât like me, and the feeling is mutual. Maybe youâre right and sheâs hightailing it home as we speak,â Jace said. âBut whateverâs going on with her, Iâm going to find her and make sure she gets
