said, rapping her nails on the granite tabletop. She was rigid and kept breathing long, deep breaths to keep from changing. She wanted to speak to him human to human, it was imperative to her to stay in form and not shift, especially since the battle was to take place the next day at the cabin.
"I swear I didn't know who you were at first when we met at the coffee shop. I want to get that out first and foremost. I liked you and I was afraid if you knew who I was, you'd never get to know me. I was going to tell you tonight." Grayson said all at once, opening a floodgate of thought and emotion. "I'm part -was part- of the Fenris clan. I was NOT an active participant the night your grandmother died, I swear to you."
Rage boiled inside Lynx like a molten pit of lava. Her body betrayed her want of human form and threatened to shift, sliding in and out of wolf form. Her teeth would gnash and then immediately go back to human teeth, her skin ripped and her fur body broke through only to be mended and brought back into skin. She had no words as she processed the information.
"Was it all a trap? To bed me and weaken me before the battle? You know there is to be a battle this year; I'm not backing down and retreating this time." She said as she walked to pour a glass of water to try and ease her back into a lower blood pressure and stop the cell division that kept morphing her body.
"Yes, I know that you plan to fight the Fenris pack, but no, I was not trapping you. I was selfishly trying to just keep seeing you for as long as I could before I had to tell you."
She didn't know whether to believe him or not. There were so many conflicted emotions that swirled around her heart and mind. There was only one way to know for sure. She closed her eyes as her breathing became jagged and fast. In minutes, she was in full wolf form and able to scan back to that night and assess the members. She hurriedly went from one wolf to another, and saw that Grayson was right; he was not there that evening.
When her eyes opened, her breathing was back to normal, her body back to its human shape. "The alpha there, what was his name?"
"Christian. Christian has been trying to end your existence since he took over the pack. Mainly because you were suppose to be Fenris' Alpha."
"How was a Rafe wolf, especially a female Rafe member, supposed to head the Fenris group?"
"The legend had it that you were born from a tryst from the head of both packs, and that you'd lead the most powerful clan. Your mother was the Rafe Alpha and your father was Alpha to the Fenris pack. Christian assumed that Fenris was the one the legend referred to as the most powerful and that you were destined to take over his group." Grayson said, allowing her to pace back and forth to steady her nerves as he told her everything that he knew about the legend, about Christian, and about Fenris.
Chapter Six: The Battle at the Cabin
After a restful night's sleep together, Lynx and Grayson woke to head to the cabin. They were ready to fight to the death; Lynx to avenge her grandmother's death and Grayson to fight alongside the woman he loved. They parked miles from the cabin and did the rest of the journey by foot, careful not to leave tracks. They laid in wait for Christian and his underlings.
After three or four hours, they heard the faint howls in the distance, the breaking of twigs cracked and popped around the cabin. Lynx took position in a far corner in the back room while Grayson hid in the front wardrobe. While they both knew that as soon as Christian entered, he'd be able to sense their presence, they hoped for just enough surprise to get the drop on him.
Christian entered the dark cabin; his eyes fire red. He swiftly changed into wolf form and prepared. His body arched, face lowered and his teeth gnashed. His nose sniffed around the air, finding two bodies in the cabin. By the time his eyes reopened,
