wants to go out on a date or something? I donât even know if my mom would let me go. And right now in the sports season there arenât any basketball games or anything I can say Iâll be at to meet up with him or anything.â
âA lot of people go to the mall in groups. Do you think sheâd let you do that?â
âProbably not, and Iâd be grounded forever if I said I was going in a group and she found out there were boys included. Besides, the mall has that weird policy about too many teenagers together. They think weâre all, like, in a gang or something,â I said.
âOh right, that âguardian must accompany a group of minorsâ thing. So lame. See? I donât even get asked to go out in groups big enough to worry about that,â she said laughing.
âOh please, guys are intimidated by how pretty you are,â I said.
âWhatever, says the TV model.â
âOh wow, Vladiâs calling me right now,â I said.
âPick up!â
âI canât hang up on you for him. That goes against girl code.â
âLandry, I am so hanging up on you right now. Call me as soon as you get off the phone with him. I want details. Bye,â she said.
I clicked over, took a deep breath, and said, âHello?â
âHey, Landry. How was your day?â Vladi asked.
âKind of crazy. I forgot I had a huge social studies test today. I only found out about it at the bus stop.â
âOh man, what happened?â
I pulled my knees up to my chest. âWell, Ashanti and I snuck sandwiches in the library and borrowed her friendâs flash cards to help me study, so I was a little more prepared.â
âThatâs awesome. Ashantiâs a good friend.â
âThe best.â My phone beeped and I saw I had a text from Devon to, âCall her immediately.â I didnât want to get off the phone with Vladi just to have to explain myself to her.
âSo how do you think you did on it?â he asked.
âUm, okay. Not fabulous, but way better than average. It was all still fresh in my mind when I sat down to take the test, you know?â
I asked him about his day, and he started to tell me when my phone beeped again. This time it was India asking where I was and why I wasnât responding to Devonâs text. Seriously? Like I couldnât have a life and be busy or something?
âLater on Iâm going over to Steveâs to play video games,â he said.
âThat should be fun,â I said as I texted India I was on the phone and couldnât talk.
âUh, are you busy or something?â he asked.
âNo, why?â
âYou seem distracted and I can hear a weird thing like youâre getting texts or something.â
âYeah, itâs just⦠some stuff with India and Devon.â
âYou girls have so much drama going on all the time,â he said.
âNo, itâs justâ¦â Great. The last thing I needed was for him to be reminded I was still in middle school. âGirl stuff. Nothing major.â
âI love how girls in high school act like theyâre so mature and over drama and yet they are so crazy sometimes,â he said.
âSo itâs still like that in high school?â
âUh, yeah, like bad. Thereâs always something going on. This girl offended this other one and the whole world is ending because of it,â he said.
âAt my school itâs more like this person isnât talking to this person and no one completely understands why, but you canât say that to the other person or youâll start a world war.â
He laughed. âYup. Well, Iâll let you go handle all that so you donât get in trouble or whatever. Iâll talk to ya later.â
I stared at my phone as he hung up and felt angry India and Devon were the reason he got off the phone with me. Sighing, I called Devonâs phone.
âAbout time. I
