Karinaâs face. Karinaâs beautiful face. Twisted with anger.
Karinaâs lips were pulled back over her teeth in a snarl. She raised her hands and curled them into claws. Then she threw herself at Delia.
âIâm going to kill you!â she screamed.

A sour taste filled Deliaâs mouth. She grabbed a handful of Karinaâs expensive sweater and pushed Karina away.
Karina teetered on one of the bleacher steps.
Then Gabe wrapped his arms around her.
She went limp.
Gabe led her down to the gym floor.
Karina stared up at Delia. She began to shake. âYou wonât win!â Karina sobbed. âNot this time, Delia. You wonât! I swear it!â
Delia lowered herself onto the bleachers, trying to get her breath back. She barely noticed Brittyâs arm around her shoulders.
âWhat is she talking about? What does shemean? Why is she acting so crazy? I didnât do anything to her,â Delia murmured to herself.
She kept her eyes on Karina.
Karina dragged her arm over her cheekâand smeared her makeup all over her sweater. âYou wonât win the Conklin,â Karina promised her. âAnd youâll never, never, never get Vincent. Heâs mine, Delia. Mine.â
âV-Vincent?â Delia sputtered.
She felt dizzy. Her ear throbbed. Her head ached. Blood stained the sleeve of her orange dress.
Delia slowly shook her head back and forth. She struggled to understand what had just happened.
Nothing Karina said made any sense.
âVincent?â
With Brittyâs help, Delia hauled herself to her feet. âWhat are you talking about, Karina? What do you mean?â
Delia stared down at Karina, trying to figure everything out.
Sheâs crazy, Delia realized. Karina is crazy. Crazy.
âYou need help, Karina,â Delia called shakily. âYouâre sick.â
âIâm not the sick one!â Karina cried. âYou stay away from him!â
âGirls! What is going on here?â Ms. Bates, a gym teacher, ran up to them.
âKarina attacked Delia,â Gabe told her.
âThatâs because sheââ Karina shrieked.
âCome with me and you can tell me all about it,â Mrs. Bates said. Then she led her across the gym.
âDelia, go get the nurse to take care of that earlobe,â the teacher called over her shoulder. âIâll check on you in a little while.â
Delia slumped back against Britty.
Gabe climbed up the bleachers and took her hand. âAre you all right?â he asked.
âI ⦠I guess so.â Delia wondered if her voice sounded as shaky to her friends as it did to her. âShe didnât tear my earring all the way out. But why did she do that to me?â
Gabe glanced at the gym door. âI think one of us should stay with Karina. Iâll go,â he said in a rush. He turned and went running after Karina and Ms. Bates.
âI think you should rest before we try heading to the nurse,â Britty said.
âIâm scared,â Delia admitted. âIâm worried about Karina. Did you see the frightening look on her face? Did you see all that hate?â
Britty was pale, her eyes wide. She chewed tensely on a strand of her hair. âIâve never seen Karina like that. Never. Iâve never seen anybody like that.â
âDid you hear what she said about Vincent? She really believed it. She really believes heâs her boyfriend. Sheâs insane. She has totally lost it. Thatâs the only explanation,â Delia murmured.
âIâll talk to her later,â Britty promised. âIâlltry ⦠Iâll try to calm her down. Iâll find out what happened. Something must have set her off.â
Delia nodded. âIâm really frightened of her. Iâve never seen anybody so out of control! What if she does something horrible?â
âDonât worry,â Britty soothed her. âYouâre safe
