Katie,â he said. âI just wanted to thank the Cupcake Club for allowing Emily to hang out with you on Saturday. Sheâs very excited.â
âItâs no problem,â Emma said with a smile.
âGreat,â he said. âEnjoy the rest of your lunch.â
Then he walked away, and George couldnât resist teasing me.
âYour momâs boyfriend sure is nice,â he said.
I sighed. âYeah, well, people have boyfriends. Itâs no big deal.â
âHmm,â George said. âI wonder what would happen if they got married. Would your mom become Mrs. Brown-Green? That sounds like a new color in a big crayon box.â
He and the other boys started laughing. I probably would have laughed too if George hadnât been talking about my own mom.
âWould you become Katie Brown-Green?âGeorge asked. âThatâs kind of long. If you got a job at Burger Hut, youâd need a really big name tag.â
âHey, Katie, what do you think of Jason White?â Ken asked me. âHeâs in our science class. If you married him, youâd been Katie Brown-Green White!â
âYeah, everyone in Katieâs family has to marry someone with a color for their last name,â Aziz said. âTheyâll be known as the Crayons.â All the boys started howling at that.
âVery funny,â I said in a voice that clearly showed I didnât think they were being funny. Normally, I didnât mind Georgeâs teasing, but this was hitting a spot that didnât feel good.
Mia must have seen the look on my face. âIf you boys will excuse us, we have some girl business to discuss,â she said, looking right at George.
âEw! Girl business,â Ken said. âWeâre out of here.â
âThanks for the cupcakes,â George said, smiling at me, and then the boys went back to their table.
âThat was weird,â Mia said.
âTell me about it,â I said. âI mean, sometimes I wonder what would happen if Mom married Mr. Green, but I never thought about her changing her name. I guess she would, right? But that doesnât mean I would have to.â
âI think that would be up to you,â Mia said.
âRight. So youâd still be Katie Brown,â Alexis chimed in. âNothing to worry about. And if your mom wants to be Mrs. Brown-Green, thereâs nothing wrong with that.â
âI guess,â I said, but to be honest, something did feel wrong. Letâs say Mom did marry Mr. Green. Sheâd be Mrs. Brown-Green. Emily would be Emily Green. And I would be Katie Brown. The only Brown in the family. Plain old brown. Boring brown. Definitely not the most popular crayon in the box. âI donât know,â I said. âItâs all kind of depressing.â
Mia put her arm around me. âEnough about names. Letâs talk cupcakes.â
That made me feel a little better. But I knew it was going to be hard to get the name thing completely off my mind.
CHAPTER 4
Emily Joins the Cupcake Club
K atie, you have my cell phone number,â Mom said, looking back from the passenger seat at me. âCall me if you need anything, okay?â
âOf course,â I said. âThatâs only, like, the seventeenth time youâve mentioned it.â
It was Saturday morning, and I was sitting with Emily in the backseat of Jeffâs car. Jeff and my mom were dropping us off at Miaâs house for the Cupcake Club meeting. I donât sit in the backseat of cars a lot; usually itâs just me and my mom, and I sit in the passenger seat next to her. Sitting in the backseat was making me feel like a little kid.
Mom ignored my sarcasm. âWe should be back by six, before it gets too late,â she went on. âMiaâs mom is giving you guys lunch, and weâll all getsome pizza or something when we get back. If youâre hungry when you get home, there are granola bars in the
