extras,â I said. âBut I canât open the box now.â
âAw, please?â George asked.
âNope,â I said.
âPretty please?â George batted his eyelashes, which made me laugh
âLunchtime. I promise,â I told him.
George shook his head. âYouâre so mean!â Then he ducked back into his seat.
When I looked over at Mia, she was rolling her eyes.
âWhat?â I asked in a loud whisper.
âYou guys are too sweet,â she said. â You should be the one dressed like a candy cane.â
I think I blushed a little. âWeâre just goofing around, thatâs all.â
When lunchtime came, George remembered about the cupcake. He brought his friends Ken and Aziz with him.
âHey, Katie,â he said. âSo, do you have enough cupcakes for all of us?â
The boys sat down at the extra seats at our table like it was no big deal. Mia made an I told you so face at me, and Emma started to giggle. Alexis was busy doing something on her tablet. She looked up, said, âHey,â to the boys, and went back to it. Sheâs been in love with Emmaâs brother Matt for, like, forever, and doesnât even notice other boys.
âAs a matter of fact, I do,â I said, taking the container out of my backpack. We make test cupcakes all the time, so I end up bringing them to school a lot. Maybe for George. âHere you go.â
I took three cupcakes out of the box and handed them to the boys. Ken and Aziz starting eating theirs right away. But George did something weird.
He leaned his head back and balanced the cupcake on the end of his nose.
âBe careful!â I cried.
âSo what do you think?â George asked, still balancing the cupcake.
âI think youâre going to drop that cupcake,â I replied.
George took the cupcake off his nose and looked at me. âNo, I mean about the trick,â he said. âIâve been practicing balancing different stuff, and I was thinking of doing a balancing act for the talent show.â
âA cupcake balancing act?â I asked.
He shook his head. âNo, other stuff too.â
âIt depends on what youâre balancing,â Mia said. âCan you do, like, a long pole, with plates on top of it, and then spin them around? I saw a guy on the street do that once.â
âThatâs insane!â George said. âI canât do stufflike that. But I can do a broom. And Iâm working on a chair.â
Emma nodded. âA chair would be pretty impressive.â
âYeah, but you need music or something playing behind you,â I said.
âThat would be cool,â George said, thinking. âI donât know. I just want to do something, you know? Are you guys doing anything?â
âNo way!â I said. âIâd be too scared to get up there.â
âI donât think I would be scared, at least not after doing my camp talent show,â Emma said. âI mean, I could play the flute, but Iâve already done that.â
Alexis didnât say anything; she seemed totally engrossed in whatever was on her tablet screen.
âBesides, weâre selling cupcakes that night,â Mia pointed out. âThatâs our real talent.â
âYou got that right,â Ken said. âThat cupcake was really good.â
âYeah, George. You should stop balancing yours and eat it,â Aziz said.
George unwrapped the cupcake. âI was just gonna do that.â
Then Mr. Green walked up to our tableâMr. Green the math teacher, also known as Jeff, my momâs boyfriend. He doesnât teach any of my classes, but sometimes he has to monitor the cafeteria.
âHello, Cupcake Club,â he said. âI see youâre spreading some cupcake happiness today.â
George swallowed a bite of cupcake. âIâm definitely happy!â
âDo you want one?â I asked.
âNo, thanks,
