hesitated, then said, âMaybe. Thatâs all I can tell you.â
âWho are you?â Jack asked.
âMy name is Joel,â he said. âI forgot to tell you, before you enter the compound there is one inconvenience. My men need to check you for RFIDs. Then weâll show you to your quarters. You have a few hours before the reception.â
âReception?â Taylor said.
âWeâve put together a reception in your honor. Youâll have time to rest a little, then shower and change before then.â
âChange into what?â Tessa said. âWe donât have any other clothes.â
âSydney Lynn will take care of that,â he said. He turned and walked back toward the building.
The woman who had walked out with Joel stepped forwardcarrying a clipboard at her side. âIâm Sydney Lynn. After you are checked and cleared, Iâll take you to your rooms, where you can rest, then clean up and change. Iâll come get you when itâs time for the reception. In the meantime, if you need anything, please let me know. Iâm here to take care of you.â
âLike I just said,â Tessa said, âchange into what? We donât have any clothes.â
âWe have clothes for you,â Sydney Lynn replied. âThey should fit.â She looked at Ostin and me. âMichael, youâve grown taller.â
âI think so,â I said, wondering how she knew.
âThat which doesnât kill you only makes you taller,â Tessa said.
âAnd Ostin, yours might be a bit loose. It looks like youâve lost weight.â
Ostin smiled. âYes, maâam.â
âItâs the Peruvian prisoner diet,â Taylor whispered to me.
I suddenly realized why Sydney Lynn looked familiar. She was the woman who had handed me the cell phone at Jackâs sisterâs tanning salon. âYou helped us in Meridian.â
She smiled. âBronze Idaho,â she replied. âItâs good to see you again, Michael.â
Just then a shrill Southern voice pierced the air. âOstin!â
We looked over to see Ostinâs mother running toward us from the side doorway, her arms flailing like she was going to sack a quarterback. A much more subdued Mr. Liss was a few yards behind her.
âMom!â Ostin shouted.
As we watched their reunion I heard someone say, âMichael.â I turned back. My mother was walking toward me from the front door.
âMom!â
Her eyes were full of tears. We didnât say much, just hugged. When she could speak she asked, âAre you okay?â
âYeah,â I said.
She looked at me as if she couldnât believe we were really together, then she brushed the hair back from my forehead. âI heard about Wade. Iâm so sorry.â
âIt was awful,â I said. âStill is awful.â
She hugged me tightly again. As we parted Taylor said, âHi, Mrs. Vey.â
âTaylor,â my mother said. She hugged her.
Everyone gathered around my mother like she was a magnet, which, in a way, was true. Everyone except for Jack, who stood a few yards off, quietly watching.
My mother walked over to him. Without speaking, she hugged him, then gazed into his face. âIâm so sorry about Wade. I know what itâs like to lose someone you love. If I can do anything for you, or you just need to talk, Iâm here.â
âThank you, Mrs. Vey,â Jack said.
âCall me Sharon,â she said.
It was a little strange seeing my mother so familiar with everyone. The last time Iâd seen her was just before everyone fled through the pipe at the Peruvian Starxource plant and Iâd been captured. Since that time my mother had been through a lot with the rest of the Electroclan.
âZeus, who is your friend?â my mother said, looking at Tessa.
Tessa stepped forward. âIâm Tessa.â
âTessa,â she repeated. âIs that short
