work.â
Garrett sighed. âItâs a personal favor. My sister, Tanna, went through a rough patch, and Devin was always there for her in ways I couldnât be. So I owe him. And heâs more messed up about this latest incident than heâs letting on.â He summarized the past trouble in Devinâs world. She was shocked someone in Devinâs position just kept going about business as usualâas if none of the threats mattered or had affected him at all.
âLiberty?â
Her gaze snapped to Garrettâs. âSorry. What did you say?â
âI asked if youâve ever met Devin before.â
âNo. Why?â
âYou know the connection between your sister and mine is what brought you to my attention in the first place. Tanna and Harper are both married to men who grew up in the Muddy Gap/Rawlins area. Thatâs where Devin is originally from.â
âIâve heard Harper and Bran talk about him, and I guess he goes back there sometimes, but Iâve never met him.â
âIâm hopinâ thatâll work in our favor,â Garrett drawled.
âI donât follow.â
Garrett and Joe exchanged an oddly wary look.
âShould I shoot myself in the foot now?â
Joe laughed. âAnd everyone says you donât have a sense of humor.â
She scowled at him and then said to Garrett, âGo on.â
âThe bestâhell, the only solutionâis to send you out on tour with Devin McClain. And hear me out before you pull your gun on me. Youâve been begging us to send you on assignment. You are an excellent trainer, but this is a better training opportunity for
you
. Not only because of the money for us.â
Liberty fought the urge to laugh. It was always about the money. âWith the big swinging dick that Devin McClain wields, thereâs no way heâll agree to having a woman as his personal security. No way in hell.â
âItâll be his only choice if he wants to hire us.â Garrett fiddled with his pen. âThe rest of the guys wonât agree to be away from their families for that long. Not only that. Youâve asked for a job like this for the past four months. Hereâs your chance to jump to the next level and prove youâre qualified for fieldwork.â
âSlathering on compliments?â
Garrett smiled. âAnd youâre deflecting them. I donât say it unless itâs trueâyou know that about me.â
âYes, but Iâm still on probation.â Garrett required a year of probation for all his new hires. While it sucked that the slightest infraction could get her shit-canned, it ensured the ones who hit the twelve-month mark were worthy of carrying out the sometimes dangerous work the job demanded.
âIn four and a half months youâll be within a week of permanent status. You take on this job, Iâll give you that last week.â
âSorry, but no. Iâll pass.â
Joe and Garrett exchanged another look.
âWhat now?â
âThis information doesnât leave this room. The promoter hassweetened the pot. Thereâs a hundred-thousand-dollar bonus if the bodyguard lasts the entire tour. So if you agree to take this assignment, in addition to getting paid your regular rate, weâll let you keep the bonus.â
She perked up at that prospect. âSeriously? Every penny?â
âEvery penny, and Iâll kick in enough to cover the taxes on it.â
That money would provide a hefty down payment on a house. Roughly four months out of her life would make her dream of home ownership a reality, and sheâd get experience in the field that would increase her base pay rate. Win-win.
âDeal.â
Joe slapped a twenty-dollar bill on the desk. âYou suck.â
Garrett swept the money into his desk drawer. âI warned you not to bet against me, Joe.â
âWhat the hell kinda bet did you two make about
