understand?â
âIf I took out Duncan, it would stop theââ
âReport back to me,â Salazar repeated. âIs that clear?â
âYes, sir.â He was silent. âI didnât mean to argue. Youâre the Pez Gordo , the big boss. Iâm just concerned.â
He was concerned because if Salazar and his cartel fell, he could be part of the collateral damage, Salazar thought cynically. It was obvious Franco was very ambitious. âThen itâs time to use that concern in the way I told you.â
âIâll leave for the hospital right away. I wonât disappoint you.â He hung up.
Franco was moving fast and was eager to please but Salazar still wasnât sure that he would obey instructions if an opportunity presented itself.
Oh well, Franco was a superb assassin, and Salazar was just angry enough with the way Eve Duncan had spoiled his plans that he was willing to take a chance that Franco wouldnât pay her a fatal visit in her hospital room without taking appropriate precautions. Salazar rather liked the idea of Duncanâs lying helplessly in that bed in her room while Franco moved around that hospital like a lethal buzz saw.
But if Franco decided to do it, heâd damn well better do it right.
COMMUNITY HOSPITAL OF THE MONTEREY
âCara has good instincts,â Eve Duncan said as she turned back to Joe after watching the child walk out of her hospital room. âYouâre not easy to read, Joe. Iâm glad that whatever youâre upset about wasnât about her. Though Iâm not sure she believed you. It would have been difficult explaining a sudden change of heart. Do you know, Iâm starting to look forward to having Cara staying with us for a while?â She shook her head. âRemember, we were talking on the day Jane left for London about how my life may be changing? Then all of this happened. Do you suppose Cara is the change?â
âNot necessarily.â
Eve went still. She couldnât miss that jerky roughness in his tone. âWhat are you talking about? What is wrong?â
âNot wrong. Strange. Bizarre.â He shook his head. âI donât know what else.â
âStop playing around with words. Talk to me.â
âI donât know how to say it.â
âJust tell me.â
âThe hospital has the results from all the tests theyâve been running on you. The doctor stopped me in the hall to go over them.â
âThe results? Joe, I know youâve been ramrodding everything connected to my treatment since you brought me to this hospital, but thatâs going a little too far. Why go over them with you and not with me?â She tried to smile. âSome terrible disease popped up that he thought you should break to me?â
âGod, Iâm not doing this right. No terrible disease. Youâre very healthy and ready to go home. He just didnât want you to leave the hospital without knowing.â
âJoe, what are you trying to tell me?â
âIn my completely clumsy and inadequate fashion.â He reached out and took her hand. âIâm trying to tell you that youâre going to have a child, Eve.â
*Â Â Â *Â Â Â *
âYouâre joking,â Eve said dazedly. âItâs some kind of mistake?â
âNo.â Joeâs hand tightened around her own. âAnd no. To both questions. I wouldnât have dared come in here if I hadnât made sure the doctor had checked and double-checked. Youâre pregnant.â His teeth bit his lower lip. âAnd that goes to show how upset I am. Weâre pregnant. I canât quite take it in either. I went into shock when the doctor told me.â
âTell me about it,â she said weakly as she sat up in the bed. âIt wasnât supposed to happen. I thought it couldnât happen. It wasnât as if we werenât careful.â
âI
