kind of games?â
But Jianne had said far too much already. âIt doesnât matter.â
âMind games?â Quiet. Lethal.
âJacob, this isnât your fight.â
âYou donât think that itâs up to me to protect my wife from a stalker?â
âEstranged wife,â she said softly. âTwelve years estranged.â
Jacobâs lips twisted bitterly. âSo you want the protection my name affords you and nothing else. Nothing else from me.â
It sounded so wrong when he put it like that but that was exactly what she wanted. Sheâd thought, hoped, that everything could stay the same and that their travesty of a marriage could continue on as before. She hadnât once considered Jacobâs needs. âJacob, if you want a divorce justâ¦get one. If thereâs someone elseâ¦â
He stared at her broodingly. âWhat would your unwanted paramour do if he knew you were free of me?â
âI donât know. It doesnât matter. Whatever it is, Iâll deal with it. If you want a divorce, do it. You shouldnât have to consider my needs in this.â
âYou know, one of these days, Jianne, youâre going to realise that martyrdom isnât what people want from you,â he said with quiet viciousness. âThat itâs perfectly okay to state your needs and expect them to be considered.â
âOkay, then.â She took a steadying breath and stated her needs straight. âI do need to stop Zhi Fuâs pursuit of me. Coming to Singapore has helped with that. Iâm staying with my aunt and uncle, and theyâre not inclined to encourage his pursuit. Heâll not have the access to me here that he had in Shanghai. Heâll tire of his games soon.â Surely he would tire of his games soon. âAnd Iâll be free of him.â
Jake stared at her broodingly.
âJake, Iâd rather not involve you. Not unless I absolutely have to.â
He didnât like that. He jammed his hands deep in the pockets of his dress trousers, ruining the line of his suit or enhancing it, depending on oneâs preference. He looked away, to the window. He looked anywhere but at her. âWill you at least call someone if you think youâre in danger and need help?â he said finally.
âI will. I have my cousins and my uncle to call on. Maybe even Madeline or Luke. But Iâd rather not call you. Surely you can see why it canât be you?â
âBecause Iâm as unwanted as he is?â
âWhat? No! For pityâs sake, Jacob. You and Zhi Fu are nothing alike. Him, I donât want at all, whereas youâ¦you I once wanted too much.â It was hard to admit that. Her failings. Her flaws. But he deserved that courtesy from her, this husband who asked if she was in danger.
âDo you think I canât protect you?â he said next.
âHave you always been this self-effacing?â
âItâs new,â he said grimly. âI hope to hell itâs temporary.â
âIâve seen you fight to save your family, Jacob. Iâve experienced firsthand what you can do, and will do, to protect the people in your care. I know youâd protect me if I asked it of you.â
âBut you wonât ask.â He looked at her then and she gathered her courage and held his gaze. Timid rabbit, staring down the tiger.
âI canât.â
âWhy not?â Always such absolute focus on the issue at hand or the person he was with. When heâd taken her in his arms and made love to her, ecstasy had rained down on them from the heavens. And when his attention had shifted to other responsibilities, Jianneâs demons had surfaced and demanded their due. Obsessive love was like that. Incandescent. Unforgettable. And ultimately destructive. âJianne, I need a reason. Why wonât you let me help you?â
âHow? By pretending to be the happily reunited
