heâs not intentionally ignoring you. Just saying.â
âIâll check.â Delaney clicked into the system that listed current inpatient numbers. When she got to the pediatric floor, her eyes widened. âHolyââ
âExactly.â Megan raised her eyebrows.
âWe donât even have that many pediatric beds.â
âI know. They had to move a couple of the teenagers up to adult floors to make space.â
Delaney clicked back through the past month, and the patient counts went up and down a little bit, but not much.
âIâm just sayingâthis could be why Dr. Mackenzie hasnât called back.â Megan leaned close to Delaney and plucked open her top button. âWhich means you, third floor, this afternoon. Heâs clearly isnât coming to you.â
Delaney felt the chills creep down her spine. She had never actually been on Mercyâs pediatric floorâhad never been on any pediatric floorânot since Parker had died.
âDelaney? You okay?â Meganâs brow creased as she studied Delaneyâs face. âYou are six shades of white, girl. Does talking to non-executive-suite people make you this scared?â
âNo.â Delaneyâs voice came out in a whisper.
âOh.â Meganâs hand flew to her mouth. âOh, God. Iâm sorry.â She squeezed her eyes shut. âIâm so sorry. I wasnât thinking.â
Delaney nodded slowly. âItâs okay. Itâs beenâa long time since he died. Not like you would think of it.â
âBut I should have. Iâm really sorry.â Megan tried to look into her eyes, but Delaneyâs felt all shifty. âDo you want me to go with you?â
âNo, Meg. I donât want to go at all.â
âButââ
âI know. Heâs not coming to me.â She took a deep breath, blowing it out slowly. Maybe it wouldnât be horrible. Maybe she wouldnât melt into a panic-puddle at the elevator doors. Maybe she wouldnât see Parker everywhere she looked.
Maybe pigs flew.
She looked left, looked right, picked up a pile of papers on her desk, put them back down three inches from their original spot when she noticed her hands were shaking.
Dammit.
She had a job to do, and in order to do that job, she needed Dr. Mackenzieâs cooperation. And in order to get his cooperation, apparently she was going to have to hunt the man down on his own turf.
She took a deep breath. She had to justâgo. Get in that elevator, punch the three, and brace herself.
âIâll be okay. I will.â She stood up.
âYouâre going now ?â
âI have to.â Delaney put a hand on her stomach, trying to hold in the grasshoppers she pictured trying to body-slam their way out. âIâve got a deadline. Dr. Mackenzieâs not really giving me a choice.â
âYou sure you donât want me to come?â
Delaney smiled at her, but it was forced, and she knew Megan could see right through her. âThe executive suite already takes enough crap for being disconnected from the realities of everyday life at Mercy. I probably shouldnât risk people thinking I need an escort to find my way to the third floor.â
âIâm your assistant, though. It would look completely normal for me to come with youâto take notes, or whatever.â
âI appreciate it. Really. But I need to go by myself. I should have done it long ago. Iâll be fine.â
Megan didnât commentâjust sent her eyebrows upward.
âOkay, I wonât be fine. Iâll survive. Better?â
âMore honest, at least. Yes.â Megan pulled Delaneyâs notebook from her desk. âDo you have your list of target cuts?â
âI thought we decided I would play nice for the first meeting.â
âThat was our strategy three days ago, honey. Weâre running out of time for nice . Youâre
