back later!â I slam down the phone and rush back to my seat at the table. âOkay, Dad, as you were saying?â
âOkay,â he says, raising his eyebrow. âThis afternoon I got some wonderful news. Actually, itâs great news for all of us! I just found out Iâm getting a big promotion at work.â
âBut Dad, I canât go to the concert. I have no money to buy a ticket,â I say with a sigh.
Dad shakes his head. âHannah, what are you talking about?â
âYou just said you were taking us to the Josh Taylor concert, and I said I donât have money for a ticket.â I glance over at my mom, who is frowning.
âI didnât say anything about a concert.â He looks confused.
âYou didnât? Iâm sure you just said you were taking us to the concert. Didnât you?â
âNo, Hannah, I said I got a big promotion at work.â
âPromotion?â I repeat dumbly.
âYes, promotion! This is my exciting news! This is what Iâve been trying to tell you!â His face is beaming. âToday I got a promotion.â
You know when youâre in a soccer game and youâre right beside the net, the ball is speeding toward you, and youâve got a clear shot to score the winning goal, but instead the ball slams you right in the gut â¦
No one seems to notice that Iâm in a state of shock. Why would they care? They have exciting news to talk about. Whatâs so exciting about a stupid promotion anyway? I mean a promotion is just ⦠well, a better job and more money and ⦠wait a second ⦠I think I may have possibly found a silver lining to this grey cloud of information.
âHey, Dad,â I say, flashing a big smile, âcongratulations on your promotion. So I guess that means youâre going to be making, like, tons of more money, right?â
He smiles back. âWell Hannah, it means a lot of things, and yes, a nice boost to my salary is one of them. It also means that thereâs going to be a few changes around here. Iâll be working a lot and so I wonât be home as much as I am now. Your mother is going to need you to help out more.â He reaches over to give my momâs hand a squeeze. For some reason she isnât smiling back. Weird ⦠youâd think sheâd be crazy happy about a nice fat paycheque! Instead, she gets up and starts clearing the table.
âSo, Dad,â I say in my sweetest voice, âI heard some exciting news today, too. Josh Taylor is coming to Glen Haven. Isnât that exciting?â
âIâm sure it is for you, Hannah,â he says.
âYeah, so I really want to go to his concert,â I blurt out.
âThatâs nice,â he replies, totally not taking the bait.
âWell, Dad, with your new raise and everything, do you think youâd have enough money to buy me a ticket?â I half whisper.
âYeah, I think I could manage that,â he whispers back, smiling.
âReally! You could manage it?â I say in a hushed squeal.
He nods. âYup, I think I can definitely manage it.â
Wow, that was easy! He said yes! Itâs totally official! I am going to see Josh Taylor, live in concert, breathing the same air and â¦
âManage what?â says my mother from across the kitchen.
I shove a piece of pizza in my mouth.
âHannah just asked me â¦â Dad starts.
âMmmmm,â I say loudly, with my mouth full, âthis pizza is so good!â
My motherâs eyes narrow. âHannah, what did you ask your father?â
âOh, Mom,â I scold her, âthis is Dadâs night, not mine. Letâs not talk about me.â
âHannah, I know whatâs going on here,â she says, frowning, âand itâs not going to happen.â
Great, and just like that another soccer ball slams me right in the gut.
My stomach hurts.
