and, letâs face it, being shot is never a good thing, but I donât understand it. Why is Gabriel beckoning me toward someone who is going to shoot me? And then comes the worst question of all, the one I try not to think about. Is it Gabriel who shoots me? But I know he wouldnât ever do thatâI know he loves meâso that shows you how fucked up visions are. You start believing them instead of what you know.
I arrive back in camp and drop down by the fire. Iâm not sure why Iâve come back. I was going to run to the south and set traps for rabbits, but itâs only now Iâm back at camp I remember that.
âYouâve been gone a long time. Were you lost?â Gabriel says, coming over to me.
Him and his bloody passwords.
I say, âYouâve got it wrong. Youâre supposed to say, âYouâve been a way a long time,â and Iâve only been away a few hours so the whole thing is stupid.â
âIâm trying to keep to the spirit of it rather than word for word.â
âIf I was a Hunter youâd be dead now anyway.â
âAnd youâre doing your best to make that seem preferable.â
I swear at him.
He shuffles his feet, scuffing the dirt up a little. I get out the Fairborn and my sharpening stone and set to work.
Gabriel crouches beside me and says, âAre you doing that for a reason?â
âThought Iâd take a look around. Check on stuff.â
âI thought you were going to set rabbit traps today.â
I look at him. âIâm feeling lucky. Might find some Hunters too.â
I know I said Iâd do rabbits today and check on the Hunters tomorrow but Iâve changed my mind. I want to get back to the Hunters and see if more have turned up.
âWe need food. You said youâd do the traps.â
âIâll do them too.â
âYes? Really? Or will you go off for days and leave me not knowing if youâre alive or dead?â
I carry on with the knife.
Gabriel reaches out to touch my arm. âTalk to me, Nathan. Please.â
I stop sharpening the knife and turn to look him in the eyes. âI told you. Iâll do both.â
Gabriel shakes his head at me. âWhy wonât you tell me whatâs going on?â
âYou know whatâs going on, Gabriel. Iâm trying to find the witch that killed my father. Though somehow sheâs disappeared. The good thing is that, in my search for her, Iâm finding Hunters. Thereâs a lot of them around. Itâs a big country but Iâm finding them and killing them.â
âDo you really think you can kill them all?â
Itâs a genuine question, but I think itâs more to test my sanity rather than my ability.
I smile at him and try to look as mad as possible. âMy father seemed to think I could.â
Gabriel shakes his head and turns away from me, saying, âSometimes I think youâve got a death wish.â
Sometimes I wonder that too, but itâs when Iâm fighting that Iâm absolutely sure I donât. Itâs then that Iâm sure Iâm desperate to stay alive.
Gabriel continues. âYou risk your life with each attack. They can kill you, Nathan.â
âI go invisible. They donât know Iâm there until itâs too late.â
âYou can still get hit. With bullets flying all over the place itâs a miracle that hasnât happened. You nearly died from a Hunter bullet in Geneva. The poison nearly killed you. A woundââ
âIâm careful. And Iâm better than them. Lots better.â
âThey can become invisible too. They can stillââ
âI told you Iâm careful.â
Gabriel frowns. âItâs not just about you. Your attacks bring more Hunters our way, lead them closer to us and to Greatorex, bringing more danger for everyone.â
âGreatorex and her gang are training for that day, though as
