pop-ups?â
I nodded. I didnât know about his site, but there were ads on almost every site.
âThose people pay me money in exchange for me putting their ad on my site. The more people who visit â the more hits â the more they pay me.â
âIâll go there every day⦠a few times a day if you want!â Wally offered enthusiastically.
âThatâs what I like to hear.â
âSpeaking of web sites,â his camera guy said, âwhat would you two think about being on Bam Bamâs site?â
âYou want
us
on his site?â Wally asked. He sounded as astonished as I felt.
âWhat trick do you want us to do?â I questioned.
âNot a trick,â the camera guy said.
âYeah, Iâm the only one who skates on my web page,â Bam Bam said.
âThen what do you want?â I asked.
âI shot the two of you reacting when you met Bam Bam,â the camera guy said.
Unless my expression was different than Wallyâs, he wanted shots of us looking like a couple of idiots.
âThat would be incredible!â Wally exclaimed. âIncredible!â He paused. âHow much do we have to pay you to be on the page?â
Both the camera guy and Bam Bam burst into laughter.
âYou donât have to pay anything,â Bam Bam said.
âBut I thought that people had to pay to be on your page,â Wally said, sounding confused.
âSponsors do. You two arenât sponsors. All I need is your permission, in writing, to put your photos up.â
âYou got it! Just show me where to sign!â Wally said excitedly.
The camera guy whipped out a couple of pieces of paper from his camera bag. âFirst I need to get your names.â
âIâm Wally ⦠Walter Waltniski.â
âWow, your parents thought the name was so nice that they named you twice,â Bam Bam joked. âJust like me.â
The camera guy asked Wally how to spell his name and then wrote it down and held out the form. Wally signed it without looking. He could have been signing away his soul.
âAnd you?â the camera guy asked.
âIâm Phillip Falcone.â
âFalcone? How do you spell that?â
âLike the bird, Falcon, with an extra e at the end.â
âFalcon,â Bam Bam said. âThat is so cool. Just like Tony Hawk, except isnât a falcon stronger?â
âI donât know about stronger, but a falcon is the fastest thing in the world,â I said.
âCool. Now if you two donât mind, Iâve got to get to work. We need to keep updating our web site. If people know thereâs newmaterial theyâre more likely to visit every day⦠just like Wally here is going to do from now on.â
Bam Bam skated off while his camera guy finished getting my signature â at least I read the form â and then moved into position to start filming. Wally and I stood off to the side.
âWonder what heâs going to do?â Wally asked.
âHe does so many tricks, it could be anything.â
âWhatever it is, I know itâs going to be good,â Wally said. âHeâs just about the best.â
Almost on cue, Bam Bam pumped to gain enough power to climb the bank. He did another revert â perfect like all the rest â charged down the hill and ollied up and onto the rail. He tail slid along the rail and then he kicked it out, landing heavily on his side, the board flying off, skittering across the pavement toward us. I bent down and grabbed the board as it rolled by.
âDo you think heâs hurt?â Wally asked.
âItâs not him thatâs going to get hurt,â I said.
âWhat do you mean?â
I held up the board. âBam, bam, bam.â
Bam Bam slowly got to his feet. He had a scowl on his face as he came walking toward us. I looked at his board. It was beautiful, almost new, hardly a scuff mark on it, expensive trucks
