down the bench. Do you understand all that?â
âWe understand,â I said and Kia mumbled agreement.
âAnd you still want to come to the try-outs?â Mr. Roberts asked.
âWe do,â Kia said.
âThen Iâll see you two right after school.Donât be late or youâll have to run laps. And speaking of late, you both better get going or youâre going to be late for ââ
His words were cut off by the loud ringing of the bell.
âTell Mrs. Orr that you were late because you were talking to me,â Mr. Roberts said.
âWeâre not late yet,â I said. âWe just have to get to class before the national anthem starts.â
âSee you later, sir,â Kia said as we rushed out of the gym.
We hurried along the hall toward our room.
âThat wasnât very encouraging,â Kia said as we walked.
âThatâs an understatement. He basically said that he didnât want us on the team, and heâd be really tough on us during the tryouts, and even if we do make the team, either the other team will be shoving us around, or weâll be spending most of our time on the bench.â I paused. âDo you still think we should try?â
âWhat do you think?â
âI think we should ââ
Suddenly I was grabbed from the back, spun around and slammed against the wall.
Chapter 4
Welcome to my World
âLeave him alone!â Kia yelled.
âShut up!â Roy snapped at her, but he did let go of me. âI wanted to have a little conversation with you two.â
âMaybe we donât want to talk to you,â Kia said.
âThatâs no problem, because Iâm going to do all the talking and you two are going to do all the listening.â
âWe donât have time for either,â I said. âIf we donât hurry, weâll be late for class.â
âStay where you are or youâre going to be late in a whole different way. Like in dead, departed, the late,â Roy said.
âPlease stand for the national anthem,â the P.A. crackled.
Now it was official. We were late. I looked up and down the hall. There was nobody else in sight.
âI donât like you two,â Roy said, wagging a finger in my face.
Now
there
was news.
âAnd Iâm liking you even less by the minute. Whatâs the big idea about coming out this morning?â
âWe were just trying out for the team,â I said.
âThat team is only for grade fives,â Roy snapped.
âMr. Roberts said we were welcome to try out,â Kia said.
âI donât care what Mr. Roberts said. Iâm telling you that I donât want you two on my team!â
âYour team?â Kia questioned. âWhat makes you think youâll even make the team?â
I had to hand it to Kia. She had more guts than me. Then again, it would be my guts on the floor if Roy was mad.
âYou better hope I make the team,â Roy said ominously. âBecause if you two make the team
and I donât⦠believe me, I wonât be happy. Understand?â he asked as he poked me hard in the chest with a finger.
âI⦠I understand,â I stammered. There wasnât a lot of room to not understand. âMaybe we could all be on the team together.â
âForget it! I donât want to be on the same team with you!â
âYou canât threaten us,â Kia said.
âIt looks like I just did. Besides,â Roy said with a smirk, âthis isnât a threat⦠itâs a promise.â
He stepped forward until he stood right over top of me. I stumbled back a few inches into the wall. At that instant the national anthem ended and I was now free to run â or at least try to run.
âIâm going to ââ
âWhy arenât you three in class?â
Roy stepped back and we all turned around to see Mr. White, our music teacher, walking toward us. I
