loving concern, he took a step towards her, his arms outstretched to embrace her.
âDonât come near me!â she sobbed, cringing in horror. âDonât touch me! And donât you darling me!â
He bit his lip and swallowed, the hard-packed muscles of his torso tense with angry apprehension.
âBut, sweetheart,â he insisted, âI swear, youâre getting the wrong ideaââ
âIâm not, but I wish I was!â she cried desperately. âOK! Go ahead! Give me the right idea. This should be good! I canât wait to know why youâre both virtually naked andâandââ her voice wobbled ââand why Celine looks so darn pleased with herself!â
âCeline,â Dan said, suddenly icy quiet and remote, âcollect your clothes andâ¦getâ¦dressedâ¦â
Alerted by his halting speech, Helen shot a fierce glance at Celine. The towel around the womanâs body had dipped a fraction. Dan was blinking rapidly at the sleepy nipple that had appeared. He seemed stunned, as if his brain had been overcome by lust, and Helen felt her heart sink to her boots.
âOf course,â Celine purred accommodatingly, making sure that her cover-up involved a lot of jiggling around.Helen gritted her teeth, wanting to slap the woman for being so obvious. âDonât forget, though,â she fluttered, âthe meetingâs in an hourââ
âNo!â Dan threaded his fingers through his thick hair, causing small black curls to tumble haphazardly onto his forehead. He was clearly having difficulty getting his mind into gear, Helen thought angrily. âI⦠Oh, hell. Cancel the meeting,â he said, suddenly decisive. âCall a taxi and get out of here. Be in my office tonightââ
âYour office ! I understand,â his PA gurgled sexily.
Danâs eyes blackened with fury as his breath hissed in. âI doubt it. Youâll be picking up your things and never coming back,â he snapped.
Celineâs green eyes widened with astonishment and then her face tightened into malicious lines. âAfter all weâve meant to one another?â she objected. âConsider what youâll be missing, Dan, shackled to this⦠boring jumble sale of a woman. Weâve had such fun. Youâre one hell of a guy. Weâre great together, you said so.â
Celineâs waggling eyebrows left no doubt in Helenâs mind that the woman was referring to Danâs performance in bed. He was spluttering incoherently at Celineâs frankness, his fists clenched as if he might hit her because sheâd ruined his hopes of lying his way out of this. A wild fury exploded inside Helen.
âYou trollop! Get out of my house!â she shrieked. âOut! Nowâor youâll end up needing a wig!â
Celine backed further down the landing and Helenâs eyes squeezed shut. Sweet heaven, beside Celine she was dull and dreary! Danâs affair had been inevitable. Heâd needed more than a stranger who passed in the night, thrust foil dinners at him and ironed his shirts.
That must be why he and Celine had become close. Worse, they had meant something to one another. Andwhatever heâd said, Dan wouldnât sack his PAâshe was too valuable an employee. Heâd only been making an empty gesture, hoping it would pacify his irate wife and avert a rowâbecause he was an abject coward.
A sob lurched into her throat. Sheâd thought him to be strong and brave and noble. Mr Reliable-but-sexy-with-it. In a few brief moments his pedestal had come crashing to the ground. Her respect for him had hit the dust and rolled out into the gutter to disappear down the sewers.
She wanted to scream in despair and disappointment. Ever since she could remember, her whole world had been wrapped around Dan. And now she knew thereâd never really been anything there.
Dimly she was aware of his
