Lance. Finally she snarled, âOkay, Lance. What did you do with Hal?â
Chapter
Three
W HAT ARE YOU doing here, Amy?â Lance asked angrily. âI thought Iâd made it clear that I didnât want you around here anymore.â
âItâll take more than you to keep me away from Hal,â the girl answered. Her voice was strong and controlled. âI know youâve done something with him. And Iâm going to find out whatâone way or another.â
Lanceâs eyes were locked on the girl. His hands were trembling. He took a slight step forward. For a moment Nancy thought he was actually going to hurt Amy.
âOh, give it a rest, Amy,â he said at last. Itsounded as though he was forcing himself to be casual. âYour precious Hal has gone to his grandmotherâs up in Michigan.â
âHe didnât tell me that,â Amy shot back.
âMaybe thatâs because heâs not as crazy about you as you think he is. Could that be possible, do you suppose?â
âYou wish!â Amy looked at Lance suspiciously. âWhy would he decide all of a sudden to go visiting?â she asked. âThat just doesnât sound like Hal to me.â
Nancy could feel the pressure building. Poor Lance! she thought. He was having a hard enough time coping with Halâs disappearance, and this must seem like the last straw to him. Nancy decided to help him out a little.
âHal went to his grandmotherâs because sheâs very sick,â she said, deliberately moving closer to Lance to provide a united front against Amy. âWe donât know when heâll be back. Probably next week some time.â
âWho asked you?â Amy asked coolly, staring straight into Nancyâs eyes. âWho are you anyway?â
âSheâs a friend of Monicaâs,â Lance said. âIf itâs any of your business. Which it is not.â He grabbed the doorknob and started to close the door. âGo away, Amy. This conversation is over.â
But Amy jammed her foot in the doorway.âIâll go,â she said. âBut youâd better have Hal call me as soon as he gets back. Understand?â
âSure,â Lance said. âGoodbye.â He gently nudged Amy out of the way and closed the door. Amy kicked the closed door once, and then the room fell silent.
âWhat was that all about?â Nancy asked. âWho was that girl?â
âAmy Tyler,â Lance said through clenched teeth. âUnfortunately, sheâs Halâs girlfriend. It seems they canât live without each other. She put on quite a performance, didnât she?â
âPerformance? What do you mean?â Nancy asked.
Lance began pacing back and forth. âOh, I donât know. Somehow I just canât believe sheâs that cut up about Hal being gone. If my hunch is correct, the only thing sheâs missing right now is Halâs money. Not Hal.â
Nancyâs mind was racing. The last time Lance had seen Hal, Hal had been on his way to the mall, where he usually hung out with his friends. Friends like Amy, who loved money? Was something starting to click?
âDo you think thereâs any possibility that Amy Tyler could be involved with this kidnapping?â Nancy asked.
âIt wouldnât surprise me,â Lance said. âI know she only hangs around Hal for his moneyâor his future inheritance. She probablywouldnât mind trading him for the ransom.â All of a sudden he sounded exhausted.
Nancy rested her hand on his arm for a second. âIâve got to go,â she said. âBut Iâll be back in touch tomorrow. Try to take it easy, okay?â
Lance nodded.
Nancy walked to the door again and then paused. âThis is going to be all right,â she said reassuringly. âIâm going to the mall first thing in the morning to see if I can come up with any clues.â
âKeep an eye
