their menus and went away.
âHer,â he said quickly, nodding toward a woman whoâd just come in on the arm of a much older man.
Without being obvious, Eleanor half turned in her seat and got a glimpse of a lovely young blonde, as delicate looking as a rosebud, with a knockout figure.
âWho is she?â she whispered.
âThe daughter of the man who owns the clubâthatâs her father with her.â He grinned suddenly and turned his attentionback to the menu. âI think weâve been spotted. Donât look, but sheâs really giving you a green-eyed look.â
âAha, thatâs why you brought me here, to be stabbed in the back.â She smiled.
âIn a sense. Youâre a real pal, Norie. Iâll do you a good turn one of these days,â he promised faithfully.
âNo need. I love playing cupid. Is she still glaring?â
âSure isâ¦oh, my gosh!â His face drew up.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âHide behind your menu for a minute, quick!â Jim said.
âWhy?â she whispered.
âBecause Curry and Amanda just walked through the door!â
She felt herself sinking down in the leather booth. Frightened suddenly, for no good reason, she quickly pulled the menu up to conceal her face, leaving her shoulders and a glimpse of her long hair visible.
âHello, Jim!â came Curryâs deep voice. âHavenât seen you in a long time.â
âYouâre never home when I call at the ranch.â Jim laughed. âI get over a good bit to see Norie.â
âNorie,â Curry scoffed. âMy God, what a name. She looks like an Eleanor; pet names donât suit her.â
âYou call her Jadebud,â Jim countered.
âIn my good moods, when I want something,â Curry said darkly. âEleanorâs not much to look at, even though sheâs a damned good secretary. I flatter her a little now and then. It doesnât hurt and,â he added with a heartless smile, âit helps keep her efficiency up.â
âCurry, how can you talk like that about her?â Amanda scolded gently and Eleanor, listening helplessly, hurting, blessed her for it. âAfter all, sheâs been with you for three years!â
âSheâll be with me forever,â Currysaid nonchalantly. âWhere else does she have to go? No man will ever want her, thatâs for damned sure, and I pay good wages. What else does the little spinster need?â
âSomeone better than you to work for,â Jim said with sudden, hot anger, and Eleanor knew without looking that those dark eyes would be narrow with it. âSheâs never had a vacation, did you notice? She never takes time off at all, she just bows down to you as you pass by her. Someday she wonât be there for you to walk all over, Curry, and what will you do then?â
Curryâs voice deepened as it always did in anger. âAre you still trying to steal her, Black?â
âAny way I can, Curry,â he replied gruffly. âI may not be as colorful to work for as you are, but Iâll treat her decently and thatâs something youâve never done!â
There was a short, tense pause. âHowwould you like to step around back with me?â Curry asked huskily.
âAny time,â Jim replied tightly.
âNow, boys,â Amanda said gently, âthis isnât the time or the place. Letâs just enjoy the meal, okay?â
Eleanor felt the tension slowly relax, and she knew her fingers were trembling where they held the menu.
âLet it pass,â Curry said roughly. âBut, Black, you stay the hell away from my spread.â
âWith pleasure,â Jim ground out. âWatch your nose, while youâre about it, Curry. If it rains, youâll drown.â
Jim waited until Curry and Amanda were a few steps away before he took down the menu Eleanor was using as a shield. His face grew
